Still not talking...

DS still isn't talking and is only really saying 2 words consistenly right now. Everything is "this" or "uh oh". He has said other words in the past but doesn't seem to say them much anymore. He doesn't say animal sounds either. He definately undertands everything people are saying and is amazing at following commands, pointing to things etc. but he just doesn't say anything. His babbling has increased a lot since starting school/day care in Febuary and I do think he is progressing but I am starting to get really discouraged and worried. My DH and all my family keep telling me there is nothing wrong and so and so didn't talk until they were 2 or 2.5 etc. but I can't shake the anxiety and worry over it. The Pedi even said that she feels he should be further along and wanted to see if school helped but that if he isn't doing much better at his next check up we would need to probably do some sort of evaluation. I feel like I should do an EI assessment even though even my DH isn't on the same page. I want to do what is best for DS. He is such a sweet and happy kid so I feel like everyone is overlooking his lack of speech because he is so happy all the time.  Anyone else in the same boat? Any advice...please?

Re: Still not talking...

  • I agree - go for the EI. Even if everything turns out to be totally normal, at least you'll know either way.

As a speech pathologist I agree with MrsRek that the earlier the intervention the better the results and outcome. I do not work in early ed as I work with elementary and middle schoolers. I found this on the asha.org website: https://identifythesigns.org/
and I have a book at work that has guidelines regarding speech development and qualifying for services. What state are you in? Hope this helps! I say it's better to get an evaluation so you know for sure.

  • Another SLP here - working in preschool, but I did EI for a while, too. I'd also agree that you should go with your mommy gut. The eval process is easy at this age: some play and some parent questions.

We like kids to have a few more words at this age, not just so they're talking, but so he can communicate his needs and lessen frustration. Frustration peeks when a kiddo understands a great deal more than they can communicate. At the very least, talking to an SLP during the evaluation process, they can let you know some things you can work on at home.

I like the ASHA link mentioned above. I also like anything from Hanen (I.e. Book: "it takes two to talk)).

Good luck. Let me know if you have if any more questions!

  • MrsREK has some wise words. We were in the same boat with G in September. He qualified for speech through EI, and I'm so glad we went ahead and did it- it has really helped. Good luck! He will be talking your ear off in no time :)
