Morning Sickness

I'm a little over 16 weeks. The first trimester I couldn't stand the taste of plain water (pretty much everything was an aversion) and I was dealing with morning sickness. I thought the morning sickness was going away as of a few weeks ago. But, this week I'm back to everything tasting/looking bad and getting sick if I eat anything. I can tell I'm dehydrated and water is not tasting good again. Any recommendations on how to get more fluids in at least even if food doesn't stay??

Re: Morning Sickness

  • I got an infuser for my water bottle. I cut up whatever fruit I want the water to taste like, pop it in the infuser chamber, and put it in the water bottle. Regular water makes me gag too, and juice was too sweet, so this was a perfect alternative for me. It lightly flavors the water and is amazing (strawberries and kiwis work best for me).

My midwife recommended cutting seltzer with juice. I thought the bubbles would be terrible, but they actually helped a little. I just open the can or bottle 5 minutes before I want to drink it and let it sit.

Popsicles were my best friend until about week 8. Make them yourself or get the all fruit kind and they are pretty good. Cold always helped my nausea though, not sure if that will be your case.

When I was getting sick all the time, Boost, Ensure, or Special K Protein drinks were a good way for me to get in calories and tended to stay down better...though I don't think they are very hydrating, and they can have a lot of sugar so read the labels carefully.

And last, avoid tea and coffee. They can be delicious, but the caffeine will actually dehydrate you because it works like a diuretic. My midwife group says that if you want those things, it is ok, but make sure you match whatever caffeine you drink with a non-caffeinated fluid to ensure you are staying hydrated.

Hope that helps, and feel better!

  • I am at 15 weeks and struggling with water.  I know I am thirsty but have no urge for anything.  I have been adding MIO and Dasani drops to my water.  That way I can make it as stronge or as weak as I would like.  The popsicle idea is good too, i tend to like cold slushy drinks right now.

  • I had the same problem at the peak of my morning sickness. Drinking water made me want to vomit even more than I already did. In fact, I still can't do too much water without feeling sick. What I found worked for me was just adding some lemon or lime juice, making a pitcher with fruit like orange or cucumber. I also got one of those soda stream things and made myself sparking water with a splash of lime juice. Sparking water is still water, but the bubbles helped a ton.
