Could use some help from the babywearing gurus

I got it in my head recently that I think I want to buy a ring sling. I've got a Mai tai and I like it, but I like the idea of having something that wouldn't drag all over the ground when baby is going in and out. Then I started thinking that maybe I should get a woven wrap for more versatility. I could get some rings and do a no sew type thing when I want a ring slung type carrier. I'm just worried that a) it will be harder than I'm thinking to make the no sew sling work and b) what if I buy a wrap that is just way too long. Does anyone have any feedback for how much wrap I would need or if I'm better off just buying a dedicated ring sling and calling it a day? I do still have the Mai tai and it's not like I've been using that all that often (although in hoping to start now that the weather is getting nice).

  • 5.5 yards is a good length. It gets used up quickly when you're wrapping. I like wovens because I can back carry. Ring slings are nice for if she's asleep and I just have to run to get my daughter from the bus or something.

  • I went to a sort of natural patenting store... I guess you could call it that. Anyway, I tried on the wraps with my baby and had them teach me a few carries. I ended up getting a size 5 (4.2 meters). I'm average height/weight and mostly plan to do back/hip carries with it.

I guess I was just thinking that by getting a wrap long enough to do a few different wraps, it would be too long to use as a sling. But maybe I underestimate the amount of fabric required for slings.

  • You only need like 90 inches for a sling (give or take) so yes, a size 5 woven (4.2 meters) is WAY too long. Get a 2 or 3 woven which you can do a no sew ring sling w/ OR just do a rebozo (essentially a ring sling carry but w/ a slip knot and no rings). A 2 or 3 is plenty big enough for back carries such as a ruck which is quick and easy.

  • My size 5 is almost too long, but it does the trick. I started with a ring sling and absolutely loved it.

  • I am far from a guru but I ended up with two size 4 & size 6. Size 4 seems like a good length for a rucksack and a front cross carry. And the six for the double hammock back carry. I still only wear my ergo in public - I feel like I'm getting better with the woven but still need lots of work.

  • I didn't love my ring sling. I have a maya and I just never use it :( I have a size five wrap and I love it, but it's still a lot of fabric. I originally bought a size six and I loaned it to a friend because it was WAY too much fabric for me. I think that for quick trips a r/s or a shortie would be your best bet.

  • Yes, @nbcarlson - the 6 was also way too much fabric for me. Once I got a shorter wrap my 6 went to the bottom of the pile and has never seen the light of day.

Thanks, ladies! I'm still torn over just getting the the sling and getting a shorter wrap but at least I know about what length to go with if I decide on the wrap. I might end up buying #allthewraps after all :)
