Diaper tantrums- normal?

So, LO has been growing increasingly fussy with diaper changes and clothing changes.  The past week it has gotten exponentially worse, with full on screaming meltdowns as I try to dress him.  Is anybody else experiencing this?

  • Yes!!!! It's like trying to wrestle a screaming alligator. He's amazingly strong and determined for only being 25 pounds! I have tried to distract him by letting him hold the diaper cream or playing peek-a-boo with him and put his pants over his face. Sometimes it works and sometimes it's a complete lost cause.

Okay. That makes me feel much better.  I try to distract him too,and sometimes it works (ie, a toy or turning on the ceiling fan), but when he gets tired, he's just so ANGRY, and in addition to the slippery hog wrestling, he's SCREAMING / crying, and I just feel so defeated right now.

  • I also sometimes stop halfway through. Tonight I ended up  letting him crawl around naked for a few minutes before attempting to put his diaper on....then he peed in the floor. He just smiled at me. lol.

  • WHen we are at home, R doesn't even wear pants anymore. It's enough to just get the diaper on him, and then I set him free. However, it's getting pretty warm here so it's not an issue for him to be crawling around pants-less.

  • Yep. Since 8 months we have a full meltdown, roll over in the poop, hissy fit with every diaper or clothing change. Good times! :)

  • My LO has always hated getting his diaper changed unless he poops then he doesn't give me a hard time. But it's pretty much like wrestling a barracuda lol.

We sing the Hokey Pokey while getting dressed and that helps a lot.

  • Same exact thing going on over here, it's gotten so much worse in the past couple weeks and I don't understand why!

  • I feel like he turned 1 and went from my sweet angelic happy baby to being pissed off all the time.  I'm so frustrated.  And sad.

They totally go through phases. Rhys was sweet and happy-go-lucky, and then he went through a phase where he was fussy, clingy, and difficult. Eventually, he went back to his normal self... and now he's starting to swing back again. I know it's little consolation at the present moment, but jsut remember... this too shall pass! It's hard work being a baby and trying to walk a line between independence (hey! I think I'm starting to be able to get the hang of doing this by myself!) and still needing mama. I'm sure there's a lot to see and do, and he doesn't want to miss a minute of it. He would rather be playing than getting his diaper changed! Hang in there. He's still the same sweet little guy!

Thank you... that helps, because I know you're right.  It is just the TYPE of crying that is so hard - like I'm trying to tear his arm out of his socket when I put it through his sleeve... oh, how I long for the kitty meowing of a newborn cry!

  • Cavin is going through this as well.  I practically have to sit on him to get him dressed or to change his diaper.    ohh and good grief, let me even pick up his jacket or shoes and he starts in...
He is fine and dandy when I am done but during can be a nightmare.
I do have a pooping peter (Family guy toy that poops jelly beans) next to the bed I let him play with sometimes that helps a ton.

  • Yep, right there with you. It sucks. Sometimes distractions work and sometimes they don't.

Oh, lord. I actually break a sweat when changing this child. I frequently have to stop halfway through to regroup. He has so much rage! I dread each time....and a poopy diaper? Poke me in the eye with a pencil.

Uh huh. I have to give myself and LO pep talks the whole way through. Or just quietly cuss. Either or. On top of having a fit E likes to try to put her hands all over her poopy butt. Then screams bloody murder when I put her in the crib to rinse the diaper. Super fun times!

  • Yes. I also gave up for a few minutes and she crawled around naked and played for a few minutes. Luckily no pee but she was so happy. Sometimes, I try and hurry up to put on her diaper at night and let her play naked before bed. Its like you have to say Ok, READY SET CHANGE just to get the diaper back on lol.

  • I'm sure you have tried everything at this point but we have finally found something that works. I find something small for him to hold, something new each time, and when I hand it to him I say "mommy needs help. Will you hold this for me?" And when he takes it I say " thank you for helping mommy" it's worked for about two weeks now. And I will keep doing it until it doesn't work anymore. Good luck! I know it is do irritating!!!
