Pump vs hand expression

I still get quite a bit of milk (1/2 oz) if I hand express after pumping (nothing makes you feel like a cow more than hand expression IMO).

Is that normal? Should my pump be removing more milk? @Citrusfamily‌ & @AmyG*‌

Thanks in advance! :)

Re: Pump vs hand expression

  • I am usually able to do that as well. From what I've heard a pump is just not as effective as a baby, so you can expect a pump not to fully empty like a baby would.

Like do people actually hand express into vessels?  Am I supposed to do that?  Every time I've tried I feel like I fail miserably or do it incorrectly or something.
The nurse at my mom's group shared this video about hand expression & pumping in general. https://newborns.stanford.edu/Breastfeeding/MaxProduction.html I guess some people do collect hand expressed milk. I'm not particularly skilled at it, but if you watch the video they do have people that do that.

Lol at vessel. Sounds like a body that has been snatched and possessed by aliens.

I do squeeze my boobs into the pump bottle when I'm done. Tons of milk comes out! You should try it. See what you can get :)
  • I do not hand express? Am I supposed to? It's boob to baby pretty much all the time. :-??

If you need to get milk out and don't have a pump. Useful for working out clogged ducts etc. Otherwise its a waste of time.

I hand-expressed colostrum into a syringe in the early days. Its herd to pump colostrum so hand-expressing is easier

Expressing with one hand and collecting with the other = fucking hard
I just do it to get more out. I used to pump 6 oz in a session and now I'm down to 4ish. Womp womp.

I'm in the same boat currently. I'm down about 3oz/day when I work. Which puts me about 5oz shy for the next day. It's a vicious cycle.

  • I only manual express milk. I hated the pump the first weeks with my first, started hand expressing and just did that this time around. Makes it easy to quicky pump wherever, whenever. I'm quite good at it at this point!

I can only do it if I'm super full. About to bust kinda thing. I can't just sit and do it and have milk. Is that normal or am I doing it wrong too?
