TTC after 35

Mental Health day (child mentioned)

Being a caretaker by profession, plus private practice, plus taking care of my family = complete mental exhaustion. I can't imagine that this level of stress/exhaustion is good for my fertility. I was about to get into my car to make the trek into work this morning and I just couldn't. I turned around, went back in the house, and called in sick.

Hubby is at work, my daughter is at my parent's, and the dog is at my inlaws. The only ones home with me are the rabbits who are low maintenance. I'm drinking a fresh cup of coffee, watching some mindless television then spending the day with my hands in the dirt in my garden. Just what the doctor ordered! And by doctor, I mean me...who is not a doctor but I played one in my childhood.

Do you ever take mental health days? What usually brings you to that point and what do you do to decompress?

  • I'm glad that you were able to have a day for yourself!

I have a babysitter on Mondays. I am able to get more grading done and clean up around the house. Sometimes I get a short massage.

  • Sounds like a lovely day, and exactly what I would like to be doing right now with the absolutely gorgeous weather we're having!  I haven't called in sick for a mental health day in a long, long time, though I am sometimes sorely tempted.  It's really just as easy for me to work from home as from my office so seldom is a sick day a total day off anyway.   But, I did decide to take a comp day tomorrow and am REALLY looking forward to it, after working for 3 weeks straight.  Planning a run and a massage, and to just do whatever I feel like in the moment.

    Enjoy your "you" day!!

  • What an awesome treat! I'm so glad you were able to take a mental health day and enjoy your garden. I do not often have days like that but every once in awhile the stars align and I can enjoy a day to myself. The sad part is that usually by that point, I'm so exhausted that it becomes mainly a day of mindless tv and then I find myself feeling guilty later that I did not take advantage of a day off to do important tasks (like run to the bank, drop off dry cleaning, etc).

  • So necessary some times! LIke MamaBear I often find when I do plan a mental health day I usually end up just sitting on the couch and vegging too and then getting mad at myself for not getting more done. Definately need to plan more of these though..

  • I was a little annoyed though. Half the day I was limited in what I was able to do because I couldn't find the shed key. It wasn't in its regular spot and I searched around to all the places hubby might have left it and it wasn't there. Finally, he got home from work and I asked him where it was. He reached into his pocket, pulled the keys out, handed them over to me, and sheepishly said "sorry." I love him but sometimes he makes me want to pull my hair out.

  • Good for you for recognizing you needed time and taking it.

I decompress by obsessive cleaning. I send my husband golfing and I go to town.
I know that makes no sense………..but it is what makes me feel good. It may be a little compulsive but my house is clean…..lol.

Really its about just sitting down after its all done and feeling like i can breath. Then I do something I can't really do often cause i have no time for it…..like scrapbook. :)

Watching several hours of my DVR'd shows would be the least costly stress reliever, so I try and go from there.

I've said before how I love to shop, preferably at the outlets nearby. Sometimes if I'm having a body conscious day, I steer clear of that. The end result is usually feeling worse. Lol
In the summer months I love to garden. We have 3 flower beds, a vegetable garden and an herb garden.

I love taking my road bike out for 25-30 miles on the rail trail and zoning out! Again another summer month activity.
And lastly skinny dipping with DH in the hot tub, but that's not very fertility friendly.
  • @CML11 Where are you located that you have a rail trail? I used to live right by the East Bay Bike Path in Rhode Island. I LOVED biking that!

@MelissaMiso‌ They have a few a around here. I typically go to one in Nashua, I believe that one is close to 30 miles. It goes from Nashua, NH to Groton, MA.
We have Mine Falls too, but that's not very rode bike friendly. I really want to get a new mountain bike so DH and I can go there.
I hate riding along the road with the cars, so I like the trails better. Much safer.
  • @CML11 Now I'm completely jealous! I really want to live in NH. We took a vacation to the White Mountains a few years back and totally fell in love with the state. Unfortunately, many of the bike trails on Long Island are actually painted out lanes on the side of the road. We do have some good mountain biking trails but I'm not in any shape currently to tackle them.

@MelissaMiso‌ yeah, we like it here. There's a lot of sight seeing and outdoor stuff to do. I'll be making my way down to your state next month! My in-laws are coming into town and we always take them sight seeing, so we thought we would take them to see NYC this time. They are from Iowa, so they are so excited to see the big city!
