Changing diapers at night?

Are you changing your LO's diaper evreytime you are up and feeding them at night? LO hates to be changed, so wakes all the way up everytime I change her. I've heard different opinions lately from people, so was curious what you all do. Some people change every time (which is like 2-3 hours), even if it is only a small amount of pee. Others only do it at night if there is poop or a lot of pee. Thoughts?

I know that I wouldn't want to sleep in a wet diaper, but if it really isn't bad, I would rather her stay in a semi-sleepy state.

Re: Changing diapers at night?

  • I changed him if he pooped and in the early days that was at every feeding.

I would mostly do it in the middle of a feeding so that way if would calm him back down

I would only change her if she's poopy or if she's a baby that doesn't like to be wet. When mine was that young, he hated to be wet so I always changed him because I knew he wouldn't fall asleep otherwise.

If she doesn't mind being a little wet, I think it's fine to not change her.

That being said, if you do change her, definitely do it before you feed her. That way she has a chance to get drowsy again before going back down.

  • I change the twins diapers before every feeding.

  • I do everytime. Just kind of our routine. I pull her out of the bassinet, change her diaper, feed her and then back to sleep. Only light I have on is the tv and I try not to talk to her much.
  • Up until he was about 6 or 7 weeks, I changed him each time. Now we only change him if there is poop or if we are battling a rash. We slather on the diaper cream at his last change before bed so the moisture won't irritate his skin.
  • Early on I changed her every time we woke up to eat. Now I only change if there is poopy or if her diaper is really full.
  • I change my LO if he's pooped, or if I need to wake him up a little bit (if he woke up because he's hungry, but started to fall back asleep).
  • I only change at night if it's been a long time or it's bothering her. But she also doesn't poop at night since about 5 weeks.

  • I change him first and then feed him.
  • Funny you asked this because I've been wondering the same thing. She consistently wakes up twice during the night and I change her the second time she wake up. I probably should change her at both feedings though...

  • I haven't been doing this very long, but I check the diaper at every feeding, and if it's wet or poopy at all, I change it.  Not only does the act of checking/changing wake him up enough to feed, but I don't want him sitting around in a wet or poopy diaper.   I don't think the wetness irritates him that much, it's just that it's only one very small spot in the front that gets saturated when he pees, and I worry that if he were to pee again it wouldn't all be absorbed, and we'd end up having to change jammies and bedding too.  I'd rather just change his diaper.

  • I go all over the place with this one.  Usually, my sweet BB likes to wait to poop and/or pee until we're in the middle of a nursing session. But only in the middle of the night...  It's like she knows I want to go back to sleep and she's desperate to hang out for a bit longer. So usually when we're done nursing I change her.. Or if it's explosive I change her right away, and then she'll surprise poop again, I'll change her once more... And then finally I swaddle her, and I rock her back to sleep.

  • I change my daughter as soon as she gets up while the bottle is warming, even if she wakes all the way up she goes back down as she's having her bottle. I also don't like to leave her in a wet diaper, I'd lie in bed and feel bad that she's got a dirty diaper on, ha.
  • I changed with every feed.... before the feed happened. Dim room and no talking.
