High BP :( anyone else?

So I had my weekly appt. with my RE today & my BP was 143/109, last week it was 137/90! I have NEVER in my life had high BP! I have also been suffering with migraines & headaches for 9 straight days! (I have suffered from migraines & severe headaches since puberty) My RE immediately sent me to my OB & they have me going in for a f/u on Friday. They aren't sure if one is triggering the other or what. They will probably have to put me on meds or possibly admit me to the hospital if I can't get it under control (I am AMA, have had IF & carrying twins) I'm a little freaked out because I'm only 11w5d & a FTM! Anyone else have or had a similar situation? On a good note the nuggets looked great with perfect heart beats! Sorry to ramble, thanks for listening!

Re: High BP :( anyone else?

  • Mine has been a little high. My OB told me to make sure I was getting plenty of fluids and exercising when I can. She also said that it's common for BP to be high for some women in the first trimester (all the increase in blood) and it usually evens out in the second.

  • @sragreen‌ Thanks for you input! I'm am drinking at least 70oz of water daily, usually more. I will admit I have not been as active as I'd like due to ms & feeling extremely tired. However starting today I will be sure to try walking at least a mile or so a day to help. I'm determined to do what ever I can to eliminate this problem as best I can & as quickly as possible! Thanks again!

  • @Di_126‌, thanks for sharing your experience! I do have a cuff here at home (DH has had HB since he was 18) & I plan to start monitoring 2x a day just to rule out any craziness! I would really like to avoid meds if possible! Sorry you had such an issue at delivery! Hoping we both can get a handle on things soon!

  • I have it. It's genetic, in my case.

I take my BP every day, at exactly the same time. This gives me a nice little log to show my OB. ("Yes, my BP is actually 130/80, NOT 160/100.")

I am also a horrible white coat hypertensive.

  • @NYGWildcat‌, thank you! I'm thinking a log will be beneficial either way! I never feel anxious / nervous & have not had this problem previously with any of my prior docs or appointments. Although I'm sure the additional hormones & such could have an effect! Thanks again for the support!

  • No prob! I'm in a "wait and see" pattern with my OB -- hopefully it will come back down to my prepreg level (which was somewhere in the 125/75 range) in the 2nd tri.

I'm glad no one took it before my NT scan, I'd probably have been 2,000/1,000

  • I've also got white coat syndrome, and don't feel nervous when I'm there either. I have a home cuff and run anywhere from 110-115/60s at home, but 130-140 in the office. I keep a log and my provider just wants to see that when I come in. They are also having me bring my cuff with me to my next appointment so they make sure it's consistent with theirs. GL!
  • Sorry you are going through this.  I have not experienced high blood pressure but mine is typically abnormally low and at my last appointment it was elevated bringing it to normal levels. I asked if it was normal for BP to rise during pregnancy and the nurse said it can.  Hopefully everything is ok and you can get it all sorted out.  Good luck.
  • MIne was high at my first few appointments and I have never had high BP before either.  My OB told me to cut back on salt intake and we would watch it and see what happens.  Luckily it seems to have evened out and my last appointment it was normal again.  I have been getting migraines lately too and it sucks when you can't really take anything.  I was treating mine with ibuprofen before and it worked if/when I caught it in time.  Now I can't take that and Tylenol just doesn't do the same thing for me.  I hope everything works out and you can relax a little.

  • I never realized how much mine would fluctuate just because of what I was worried about. Back in January, I went to a quick clinic because I was really sick. My blood pressure was crazy high, 178/90. Since I didn't have a history of high blood pressure, they just had me come back a week later to check it. I was majorly stressing over something at work that I got through so the next appointment my blood pressure was perfect.

For my second prenatal appointment, they commented my blood pressure was a little higher than it usually was (nothing concerning), but I knew I was really nervous about the appointment so I asked of they would take it again after, and it had gone down a lot.

Moral of the story is, taking your blood pressure more frequently to try and figure out if it is truly a trend or just a situation can really help you figure out what your triggers are!

  • I had it with my first pregnancy. Pregnancy induced hypertension. Was put on magnesium and had no issues until the end when I started getting protein in my urine. Had a couple 24 hr urine collections and lots of NSTs to monitor. But for my second, and so far this time BP has been normal.

  • My bp was normal during my last pregnancy up until my 38 week appointment.  I was considered full-term and so they had me deliver that day.  My bp dropped back down within a day so I didn't need to take any bp medication, although they did put me on magnesium during delivery just to make sure I wouldn't have a seizure if it went up even higher.  It was really scary and the idea of it happening again really freaks me out.  So far, my bp has been normal again but I'm sure I'll start to get nervous toward the end.

  • Yupppp. Every pregnancy. The first and second ended in pre-eclampsia. First pregnancy had a scheduled induction at 37 weeks, second pregnancy ended in a emergent induction at 38 weeks.

At 10 weeks I was put on labetalol. So hopefully this different med will help with my high bp and I can go to my due date without induction.

  • I had high bp at the end of both of my pregnancies and ended up being induced. But when I had my appointment on Tuesday, my bp was 140/100 so they had me do a 24 hr urine collection and plenty of blood work so now I'm just waiting to see if they call or if I find out when I go back on the 22nd. I'm hoping it was just a fluke, maybe because I had my 2 year old with me lol.
