pump hose - possible mold issue?

Hey everyone,

I noticed some dark spots in one of my hoses today that I think might be mildew. (brownish black, but still translucent - had to compare to the other hose to be sure) I've already called Medela and have new ones coming tomrrow, and can use my manual in the mean time, but my question is, would you or have you used the milk pumped with this hose?

I pumped 11 oz today and am having a hard time thinking I should throw it all out, especially since the milk doesn't come in contact with that part.  And if I assume the spots were there for a few days, that would mean tossing everything from those days.  (for all i know baby has already had milk with this issue).  Anyone had this situation?  I searched through the boards and couldn't find a similar thread.

TIA!

Re: pump hose - possible mold issue?

  • Thanks that is what I am leaning towards doing. And thanks for the advice about cleaning condensation. I also read that while looking into this issue today and wish I had known that earlier!

  • In haven't had mold, but even with clearing the condensation I've not been happy with the fact that the tubes get a bit dirty. I purchased replacement tubing last week on amazon for half the price medela sells it for on their website and it has been working great- I wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them if one wasn't dirty and one clean.
  • Oh forgot to include this- medela replaced my pump in January for a faulty motor. They were great about it. During the troubleshooting before sending me a new one the rep asked if I regularly cleared the condensation from my tubes- that can be a contributing cause of motor failure apparently. (Rolling eyes just a bit)
  • Thanks for all your responses!  I happened to be at the pediatrician today and showed her the hose and she thought it was fine to use the milk too.  Definitely liquid gold!
  • This happened to me last week and I'm not sure when the mold actually started. I used the milk and LO was fine. I cleaned the hoses and ordered a new tubing the same day.

If you want to use your pump and don't have time to wait on the hoses, you can buy a Medela kit at BRU that has all new plastic parts- hoses, valves, etc.  I bought one because I used my cousin's old pump since the one insurance covered sucked.  I want to say it was around $40.
