Anyone else's LO STILL refusing a bottle???

I am at my wits end...it is still a big fight to get LO to easily take a bottle. She was doing ok for a little while, and is now backsliding into the crying hysterical fits we were initially dealing with. Every night DH feeds her (or attempts to feed her) 2 oz of formula and then I top her off by nursing to sleep. We got to a point where she took it no problem, but now she's rejecting it again. I should add that the only nipple she would take is the nipple that comes with the 2 oz ready to feed Similac for Supplementing nursers. So we actually tried screwing that nipple onto a Medela bottle thinking she just preferred the latex nipple (it did fit) but she would have none of it and now won't even take it on the ready to feed nurser. I don't know what to do anymore....I am really starting to stress about this. I feel like I can't ever leave her for longer than a couple of hours. DH and I have a weekend trip booked for July which I know is still ages away, but I am really worrying now that she still won't take a bottle even by then. Mainly I just needed to vent, but if anyone has new tips/tricks/prayers/voodoo/ANYTHING that could work I will be so grateful! And a rare pic of LO for your time below.

ETA: TB hates me and won't let me post a pic. Working on it...
ETA 2: Pic worked!

  • Mine still won't take a bottle so I have no advice. I will be stalking this thread for tips.

Mine still won't take a bottle…it's rough.  I feel you on not being able to be away for more than 2 hours or so.  Sorry no tips/voodoo etc just all my sorrys.

  • I gave up on the bottle. It was too stressful.
  • I am especially stressed because DD1 took a bottle from day one and would switch between boob and bottle with no problem. This is all new territory for me.

  • My son will only take a bottle from me. Defeats the purpose since he can get milk straight from the tap.

You can also try cup (small cup like a shot glass) feeding-it works for me but no one else has tried it yet. Don't worry too much about July-you can definitely use sippybor straw cups by then.

  • I am slightly concerned as to what will happen when LO gets teeth. Hopefully she won't be a biter but if she is... Well that would just suck.
  • I could've written your post! Even saw the lactation consultant again because i am so stressed and out of ideas. We've been trying since ds was about 5 weeks old. I go back to work in 4 weeks and am dreading it. I am so nervous he won't take a bottle at daycare. The only thing that remotely works is a medium flow nipple and letting the milk dribble into his mouth. He rarely latches on. The LC also suggested a sippy cup. It just seems so time consuming for a daycare provider to have to do! Good luck I feel your pain and the pressure to get LO to be able to take a bottle.
  • DS won't take a bottle. I've given up at this point.

  • This is us! No bottle! It's beyond stressful! Pedi said we are doing everything right...trying new bottles, walking or facing her away while trying the bottle, putting her in the bouncer and try giving her a bottle, having other people try giving her a bottle..nothing is working. She said at 6 months I can give her a sippy cup. Welp, that's 2 months away!! I have my bffs shower and bachelorette party this weekend all in one day and DH and DD are coming during the day so I can nurse her at some point then at night I have to come home from being out to nurse her. I had a hair appt and was gone for 4 1/2 hours (huge change in my hair) and we thought that would make her take a bottle...only took about 1 1/2oz. Then it was screaming fest. It's so stressful and frustrating. I feel your pain. :((

  • At most she'll take 2 oz and then the rest is wasted. The pedi says she won't starve herself, but I also don't want her to work herself into hysteria and barely eat anything while I am gone. I want to get out and do things, but I won't enjoy myself if I am worrying about LO the whole time.

  • Mine is the same way. I got her to take .5 oz the other day. But that's all. It was an accomplishment. It won't be an issue really until this summer when I have 4 hours of class straight.
  • Simon won't take a bottle right now either. I admit that we haven't been forcing the issue because I stay home and frankly it's not like our social calendar is full. The few times we have tried he screams bloody murder. It sucks. :(

Well, I've gotten 2 recommendations for the Comotomo bottle...I'm ready to try anything at this point. It's kinda pricey, but I have a $5 rewards coupon for BRU so I guess I can justify buying yet another bottle to DH!

  • The Lansinoh momma worked for us. This was after 6 different bottles and lots of frustration. And I've been back to work 7 weeks now...she takes it no problem! I haven't seen if she'll try any others though. Good luck everyone because I know how awful this can be!
  • We got the comotomo to work and once he got used to it he would take other bottles too. My second DD never took a bottle. It did get easier after 6 months when her feelings were more spaced out and she was getting solids too. We tried to give Mason the medela calma first bc ibclc recommended it and he freaking hated it. $20 flushed right down the toilet. :(

  • Mine will take a bottle sometimes -- as long as she's in a good mood and actually hungry. But we are still not consistent.

The Comotomo Natural Feel bottle is the only bottle we've had success with.

  • We had the same problem, and my son was also only willing to use the 2-oz. ready-to-feed similac.  After A LOT of trial and error (and me about ready to loose it because I had to go back to work!) we discovered that he would use the LATEX nipples for the playtex drop-in liner bottles.  We have to order the latex nipples on-line, as the stores in my area only have the silicone ones.  We had started giving him the occassional bottle when he was four-weeks-old, and didn't have any problems until around 12 weeks when he just decided he wasn't going to do it anymore.  Once we got him to take one bottle, though, he started taking them again with no problem.

This was the opposite problem we had with my older son -- once he started getting a bottle when I went back to work, he refused to nurse anymore!
  • So I just got back from BRU and they didn't have the freaking Comotomo in store. :( But I did see and end up buying the Mam Anti-Colic bottle...I am holding out hope that it could work because she loves her Mam pacis, so hopefully she will like the nipple on that bottle. It looks pretty much the same. Guess we'll see tonight....

  • @hercules03 and @dontstopbelievin, thanks for the sound advice. We'll keep working at it. I am hopeful that this new bottle could be the ticket, but if not we'll try another and use the tips you suggested. All the prayers please! Haha.

  • I had a little bit of luck getting him to take an oz from a mimijumi bottle, but eventually conceded defeat and accepted that I'll get to leave LO for longer periods eventually but not yet.

  • I went back to work on the 31, and DH had a hard time getting LO to take a bottle. She only drank 2 oz the whole first day.

Through trial and error he figured out that she prefers the latex nipples. He feeds her with the tiny cyllindrical 2 oz bottles I got when I was pumping at the hospital. For some reason she takes forever to drink from 5 oz bottles but will suck it down from the little ones.

My LO won't take a bottle if she is being held. She has to be in the swing, bouncy seat, or propped up on the couch.

@ nrg2020, so sorry...definitely no hate! Just sleep deprivation causing me to overlook your post. Love tits for all your responses! ;)
