Trouble TTC

Introduction

Hi! I'm 28 and my husband is 30 and we've been TTC since 2011. I was sure that it would happen, so I held off on seeing a doctor after a year of trying. When I finally decided it was time last summer, I started with a pap and abnormal cells were found so we had to put the brakes on TTC for months. I've went through surgery in January to remove part of my cervix (LEEP procedure) and now we're back on track!

My gyno went on mat leave so we've been referred to one of her colleagues, but it will take months before we get an appointment. I want to learn all that I can now so I know what questions to ask when we finally end up there. I saw my family doctor today and asked to have my hormone levels tested in the meantime so I did that today and the results will be in tomorrow. We'll see!

  • I totally agree with PPs, I would skip the OB and head straight to a Reproductive endocrinologist! They know so much more about fertility and they are in the business of getting people pregnant.

  • Your story sounds just like mine. I also went through bad paps and colposcopies and a LEEP. It was so hard to tell your doctor you just want to get pregnant and they say no, we need to remove part of your cervix first. I need that thing! I had my LEEP in Nov 2012 and this January I finally had a normal pap. Now we are on the road to baby making!

But my OB did the same thing. Started with blood tests and a ultrasound to see if I had PCOS. Which I do. I didn't take long to do those tests with him. Also, don't put yourself though too much before your guy has a semen analysis. Also not a big deal. See what they find and then see if you need to go to RE. My OB referred my right away. Hopefully yours with too if needed.

    Good luck to you!

  • I'm glad you were able to have the LEEP you needed and get back on track for TTC! After TTC since 2011, even with the break there, seeing an RE instead of waiting for a gyno might make sense for you. I don't know if it's typical, but my RE got me in for a first appointment less than 2 weeks after I first called...seems like they understand how time-sensitive this is to us. But good luck with whatever you choose!

I agree with looking for a RE. I actually met with OB in January (after TTC since Summer '12) and she checked for infections and did a blood test and asked by DH to get a SA. But I only saw her that initial visit and she immediately referred me to her co-worker that was a RE and I met with her a few weeks later and she did more testing, hsg, and everything in a few visits.

I would definitely try to get an appointment with a RE and have your DH get a sperm analysis if he hasn't already.

  • Welcome! Definitely skip to RE. You've been trying for a while and there's no need to waste more time waiting for an appt with someone who doesn't specialize in reproduction.

Best of luck to you and hopefully your stay is short!

  • I agree -- I'd skip straight to the RE.  You've been through enough to justify going straight to the specialist.  Sorry for all you've been through -- FX for you!
  • Welcome.  I'm sorry that you find yourself here, but I wish you the best of luck.  Yes, an RE is the way to go!

  • Welcome!  I agree with going straight to an RE.   I started testing with my OB in Oct '12, and had my first surgery to remove polyps in Dec.  I just had a gut instinct that I had endo, which I brought up before my first surgery, and again 4 months later, to my OB, and she blew me off and wanted to put me on Clomid.  After my initial month of testing with the RE, endo was the first thing she suggested based on what she saw (and it ended up being pretty widespread).  Long story short - definitely go straight to an RE!

  • Thank you everyone for your replies and sorry it's taken me so long to return! Just had to change my account (it was from the knot website and my username was outdated).

Here's my update: I'm guessing the gyno didn't refer me to an RE because the closest one is a 4.5 hour drive away. I sent my husband in to see if he could have a semen analysis and our family doctor told him that he wanted to see us together and would refer us to an "infertility specialist". So I was preparing to make an appointment and do that and ask about being referred to an RE  when I started feeling really unwell. I probably let it go for too long before I saw a doctor, but for a few months, I thought that maybe I was just being lazy. It got to the point where I was realizing that it was more than laziness and I was exhausted. I was sleeping 9-10 hrs each night and then having to take 2 hour naps in the middle of the day and just lay around for the rest. It's a good thing I work from home and set my own hours or I think I would have been out of a job. Anyway, long story short is that I have low iron and it's likely from my monster of a period. My ferritin is low and I just had a hunch and googled "ferritin infertility" and saw that they are connected and that my levels are much lower than the minimum amount considered to be in a healthy, fertile woman. So I have now started on a whole food iron supplement and am hoping that I start feeling better. We're now at the 2.5 year mark for trying, but I'm feeling a bit more hopeful knowing that I'm on my way to being healthy again.

Thanks again! Now that my account is sorted out, I'm looking forward to reading everyone's posts. :)
