REALLY stupid question

(Dumb question. Seriously.)

Is there a chance sleeping on your stomach could impact supply? I sleep so much better that way, but I feel like I'm smushing the girls a bit. (I've got a fairly low supply & have had issues, wondering if this could make it worse).

Re: REALLY stupid question

  • I would be worried about it causing clogged ducts or mastitis more than it affecting supply. Then again, I've had mastitis 7 times and still haven't slept on my stomach at 14.5 months, even though it's my preferred sleep position. Hopefully others will chime in who have been sleeping on their stomachs with no problems!

  • I think it could contribute. I sleep on my side, but sometimes tilted so it's side/stomach. Those nights, I pump noticeably less on the "smushed" side. That could just be me, though. I don't make much of an effort to avoid it because I figure sleep is more important to supply.

  • like PPs have said, 1) i don't think it's a stupid question at all but 2)i don't think it would affect your supply, but i do think it can contribute to clogged ducts. i was a stomach sleeper pre-baby, and still find that the most comfortable way to sleep, but a couple of times after i've done it i've noticed a little bit of soreness, so i avoid it.

  • I got mastitis just last month by sleeping on my tummy.  I just know that's what caused it.  My daughter was 9 months old at the time and had had no issues with latch or anything to cause it.  I would not recommend it.  I am always a back sleeper but I must have been dead tired because for some reason I woke up on my tummy.  I flipped back over but apparently the damage had already been done.  Within 24 hrs I had full blown mastitis....103 temp, chills, naseua, dizzy, sore red hard breast that even went up into my armpit and i couldn't lift my arm up above my belly button.  I would be very concerned of getting a clogged duct or mastitis.  I do not wish mastitis upon anyone as it is worse than any flu or sickness I have ever had.  I think I would rather go thru child labor vs. mastitis.
  • I sleep on my stomach and haven't had any issues.
