CPT: Did your SO have paternity leave?

edited April 2014 in July 2013 Moms
I was reading an article about US paternity leave rates, and was curious how many of our SO's had paternity leave. If they did, how much did they get?

Re: CPT: Did your SO have paternity leave?

  • My SO is self employed. He didn't really take any time off because he was still busy with work but he did leave late for work and usually came home early in the afternoons or evenings. He did take most of the day off the day we came home from the hospital.

I guess none of this really counts as any type of paternity leave but he does give all of his male employees a paid week off when they have a new baby.

  • My husband used some of his vacation and comp time. He took 2 weeks after each kid was born and then 6 weeks after I went back to work

  • The Navy provides 10 days paternity leave. We got a few extra days because we had some complications. It was nice to have since we don't have any local family to help.
  • I thought this said paternity test at first glance.  I was going to say whoa!

Don't forget to tune in to my episode of Maury. ;)

  • He had just started a new job in April, so no time earned. They did let him work from home for two weeks though.

  • @kbugcmommy you've been pregnant for an outrageously long time.
  • Dh had paid paternity leave but it's less than his regular pay. He took 2 weeks paid vacation instead.

SS - He was between jobs because of our move. He would've been able to use sick time and vacation days at his old job, but no other paid leave. He has six weeks of paid paternity leave at his new job. <:-P </p>

    Six weeks is fantastic!

Dh took off most of the two weeks that we were overdue via vacation, OT and days off. There were some things he did have to attend to. He was off the entire time in the hospital and most of the first week at home.
He now wonders if his union has paternity leave and is looking into it for future reference.

DH has said a handful of times that he really hope DD looked like him so he knew she was his.  I said, "Thanks babe, that makes me sound like a whore."  We did IVF and I know conplications in the lab are rare to none but I don't think he had the same confidence. :)
After 4.5 years our miracle IVF baby is here!

  • DH is a contractor with an IT company so he isn't an "employee," if that makes sense. Only the employees get paternity leave. However, he works his butt off and does a lot of overtime so he's really good with his boss, and he was able to take two weeks off anyway.
  • My DH had one week paid paternity... It was definitely nice having him around to help out!

  • Here in Canada, partners can take paternity leave if they "share" it with the mom....but since I'm taking the full year DH couldn't have used any official paternity time. However, he is self employed and doesn't pay into EI so he wasn't entitled to take it anyway.

He just told customers well ahead of time that he'd be out of commission for two weeks in July sometime, and it worked out that Adrian came at a time that didn't affect any of his races. It was nice to have him home for two weeks, but it sucked that he had to travel for a week when Adrian was 3weeks old. :(
  • Mr. Vals just requested a few days off from work. Things are pretty informal in the food service industry until you are management.

  • DH could have taken up to 6 weeks off unpaid, but he's our only source of income so he didn't.  He took a week's vacation that he had saved up off.  When P ended up being smaller than we thought and we ended up having to stay in the hospital a lot longer than anticipated, he took sick time.

  • My H gets a week paid paternity and then used two full weeks of paid sick leave and two more part time weeks (worked 2.5 days each week) of sick leave when DS was born.

  • DH had 2 weeks off. I think it was supposed to be unpaid but he took his vacation time and used that.

  • DH's company allows him to be off for 2 weeks. They called it paternity leave and they let him use 1 week of sick time and one week of vacation time instead of having to use 2 weeks vacation time.

  • DH works from home. So he's kinda always on paternity leave
  • DH worked half-time for 6 weeks after LO came home, using sick/vacation time for the rest. He also worked from home when he could during that time. It was awesome!

  • DH had ten days paternity leave (half of which was spent while we were in the hospital, so we were only all at home as a family for a week).

His company doesn't given a set number of sick days, its just sort of on an informal, as needed basis, so its not like he could use sick days to spend with us, unfortunately.

But we felt lucky for the time we had.

  • DH had paternity leave, but it was 60% of his normal pay. He took 4 weeks after LO was born.

Everyone is entitled to up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave (minor exceptions) via FMLA.
Yup, this for DH. But since we work for the same company, we would've had to share those 12 weeks. I wanted all the 12 weeks. He used up 2 weeks of vacation days instead.
  • My husband and I work for the same company so we only get 12 weeks combined. I took 12 weeks and he took none but used some vacation days.

I wish DH would've gotten paid leave but he had to use two of the five vacation days he gets to take off the Monday LO was born and the Wednesday we left the hospital so he worked Tuesday and went back for good Thursday..

One week paid + one week vacation days. And then his vacation days and sick time renewed in August so he took another week of that the first week of October when Luke came home.

ETA: maybe he didn't take the extra week initially? I don't think he did. That had been our plan, but I think he just took the week paid paternity leave and then saved the vacation days for surgeries and such. He took most of the week off with Luke's second surgery since it was such a huge one.

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!
DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome.
131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
  • Here all father's get 5 days paid paternity leave.
