s/o 1 year pics

For your LO's 1 year pics, are you planning on just getting pics of them or also some family shots?  We had Easter pictures done over the weekend and asked the photographer for a few family shots.  She kinda gave us a weird look but said sure and took several.  I was looking through the sneak peeks on their FB page and it seems like we were the only ones who did some family pics too.  Are we weird?

We are doing some family shots during the 1st birthday shoot.

We also opted not to have it during the party. We want to minimize the chaos.
Yeah we briefly considered hiring a photographer for the party instead of doing a shoot at a different time.  We started talking through the logistics of that and quickly changed our minds lol

  • I wonder if it's a pricing thing? Our photographer has different rates for a family shoot I think. But I imagine she'll still do a few with all 3 of us.

His 1st birthday pics will be his first pro photo shoot outside the NICU though, so I don't exactly have experience. But we're going back to our wedding photographer, so I would bet she'll be flexible.

  • I don't think it's weird at all.  Like Mimi said, maybe it was a pricing issue?  I definitely plan on requesting some family shots when we have 1 year photos taken.

Honestly, when you have access to a photographer, I think the family photos are even more important!  After all, I get pretty great pictures of her on my own, but its tough to get a nice family pic.
This. Photographers are expensive, I definitely would have taken the opportunity to get some professional family pictures.

  • Maybe it was pricing. Idk. The Easter pics were a mini session being offered by the photographer and their ad didn't say anything about how many people. Just a time of 20-30 minutes. Oh well.
  • I plan for all of us to be in some of his 1st birthday photos. I like family pictures and it's hard to get a family shot when you need someone else to hold the camera.
  • We plan on doing a few family shots for her 1 year photos too.. but that's a full photo session so IDK, if the photographer only wanted little ones in the mini session, he/she should have clarified that

Yeah it was just really strange.  I mean, DH and I were obviously there anyway so it's not like it was extra people or it took extra time.  It was just a weird situation all around.

Yeah, I don't think it was weird to ask and if the photographer didn't want to do family photos she should've specified.

Our ohotographer's mini sessions always say 'immediate family only'. She just doesn't want to be lining up the 800 grand kids all at once ya know?
Oh yeah I totally get that.  I mean, since they're short time-wise, you really wouldn't get many pictures if you had a lot of people.
  • We haven't done any pro pics since the hospital but I just booked my cousin for the week before his 1st birthday. It's not even going to be birthday themed, just mostly him with a few family shots.
  • as a photographer myself I am guessing since you did not see other family pictures on her Facebook page that she must just mainly shoot children. some photographers prefer that as it's less stressful to just focus on the kids. the more people in a photo really does turn into more work. I want to slap adults for looking off in the distance when their kid was finally looking at the camera. adults can be worse then kids. I want to be like yo, you hired me to take nice pictures for you. worry about being nosey or bird watching another time.

  • ha. :) it's like you put a camera in front of someone's face and all of a sudden there is a unicorn with a monkey on it's back flying around distracting everyone. I don't understand why it's hard to understand if you want pictures where you're looking at the camera, then you actually need to look at it. :) I actually prefer lifestyle pictures myself, but everyone always wants the perfect family picture where they "look" at the camera.

  • @mandyrator79 The photographer does family shoots, weddings, etc.  She also does "mini-session" weekends for several holidays including Easter.  Like I said before, her ad mentioned nothing about it being "only children", just that the sessions were 20-30 minutes for a set price.  I didn't see the big deal about wanting a few family shots, and it was just DH and I.  I was actually thinking about hiring her for a larger family shoot this fall with both sets of P's grandparents.  We'll see.
  • I guess she just assumed you were not doing family pictures for some reason then. we very, very rarely have someone only want pictures of just their kids. everyone wants family pictures. :)
