NPR: Sesame Place

Hi all,
I am considering taking DD who is now 18 months old to Sesame Place outside of Philidelphia at the end of July. The cost with admission, food, travel, Etc will be about 1500. We would be traveling about 7 hours to get there. We wanted to do something with her prebaby, just her, DH and I. The more I think about it I am concerned it may not go well. She's been on 4 hour car rides several times back and forth to Cincinnati and those have gone pretty well, so it's not so much the travel I'm concerned with. It's the worry that although she loves Elmo, Cookie and Abby more than her own parents, that she may be afraid of them in their very large costumes. I'm worried it may be a lot of planning, money, and angst (for me) and it may not turn out well. Does anyone have any advice?

Re: NPR: Sesame Place

  • We went around Christmas time it was a mad house but the decorations were pretty.  To me it seemed like a day trip kind of thing though so not sure how many days you plan on spending there.  Maybe check out other things in the Philly area that she may enjoy, aquarium etc.  Or maybe a six flags or other amusement park closer may be a good first trip.  They have a ton of kids stuff now a days (including life size characters) see if she really likes it then a more expensive trip would be nice.  I think $1500 is expensive for a trip there if you aren't going to visit other attractions in the area.

I thought DS would be scared he went when he was two almost three.  He was fine.  But there is enough that they can see the characters at a show and not be so scared if up an personal.  Also I had a scare with DS his eyes starting jumping on the rides, scared me to death, but he was ok afterwards but that ended the rides for him.

  • We went this past summer. DD was just about 3 and DS was 9 months.  DD loved all of it, especially the parade.  She wouldn't get up and close to the characters for pics, but she had a great time. She was able to ride all of the rides and DH took her on the water rides. DS was oblivious to it all, but he was free so it didn't really matter. I would recommend going during the week - we went on a Wednesday and it wasn't crowded at all.  Since you are going to be in the area, try to get to the Philadelphia Zoo (one of the kids friendliest zoos I have been to) and the Please Touch Museum.
  • I agree with @bethybeach - that it is expensive for just the trip to Sesame Place. It's definitely a day trip kind of place.

However, if your trip involves also spending some time in the Philly area, there are lots of things that she would enjoy in addition to Sesame. As mentioned there is the aquarium, which also has a cute children's garden in front. Philly also happens to have a newer Please Touch museum that is incredible IMO.

  • My 16 month old loves Dora out at the mall, but hates Sponge Bob. My nephew will have nothing to do with live characters. I think it all depends on the child.

I don't know that I would spend a ton of money on a trip specifically for my daughter at this point, she's too young to really remember and there's lots of fun activities where we live that would be just as fun at this point. Heck, she stood at a water table with her hands under a faucet for 35 minutes at the Children's Museum last week. Could have done that at home!

  • If you're looking for other activities in the area, Hersheypark and Dutch Wonderland aren't too far from Philly.  Less than 2 hr drive.  Lots to do in Hershey and Dutch Wonderland is entirely for kids.

  • I agree that it is more of a day trip. The park is not huge.  We live about 90 min away, so a day trip is nbd.  I wouldn't spend that much on just SP.  I agree that she isn't going to remember it anyway, and I would be upset if I spent that much $$ and my kids freaked out.  I would def. look at other things to do in the area.  My kids loved the Please Touch Museum and the Zoo.  Hershey is fun, and I had several former students rave about Dutch Wonderland.  Lancaster is also fun.  We took DD and DS to Kitchen Kettle Village this past fall, and they had a great time.  GL!
  • Thank you! I was planning on two travel days and two days at the park, so it is very helpful for me to know that it's really a one day type of thing. I have to talk it over with DH but am thinking we may wait until I know she will like it for sure. I just want to do something special with her, even if she doesn't remember it we always will!

I went to SP with my godson's family. He was a a year old and his sister was 3 and a half. She loved it and seemed like age 3 was the perfect time for her to enjoy it. They took her the year before and she cried the whole time. We did the two day pass and you are able to stretch it to two days with the water park, but it is totally doable in a day. We also had a long trip, but we traveled by train so it wasn't as confining as a car. I had a blast with her going on all the rides, but like I said 3 years was really the ideal age.

    Edit: I can't spell
  • I live a half hour from here. We went once last Christmas and we weren't impressed. Lines were terrible and parking was outrageous. I would assume its not as 'busy this time of year, but it also wasn't that big. We don't plan on going back anytime soon. I wouldn't drive 7 hours to go there either! I would save the $1700 to go towards a trip to Disneyworld!
