The "no 'poo" method

As in, no shampooing.

Anyone into this?

I used to be an everyday 'pooer, but then recently switched to every other.  (I conditioner only wash on the no 'poo day).  Yesterday was supposed to be a 'poo day, but I forgot and conditioner washed.  My hair looked awesome and a got a bunch of compliments from co-workers.  I am thinking maybe I can go even longer than every two days?  Maybe?

Anyone else trying not to 'poo so much?

  • I try to poo only every other day, too.

  • My hair gets super greasy if I don't wash every other day at the very least. Is it true you can 'train' your hair to not do that as badly? If you switch to not shampooing I mean?

  • Well there's a "no poo" method that means you don't shampoo at all, you use something else. I use baking soda and apple cider vinegar https://www.crunchybetty.com/no-poo-to-you-too
Before I made the switch I was going about every 4 days shampooing Day 1 shampoo, dry really well. wear down, Day 2, wearing down, day 3 dry shampoo and half up, day 4 wear back. And repeat :)

Yeah-- that's a little too crunchy for me, but still very interesting.  I think if I were going to try that - I would need 2 weeks off of work.

  • Ok so when you do no poo, do you still get your hair wet? just don't use shampoo on it?

I do still get my hair wet and put a little bit of conditioner on the ends.

That's what I would think too-- my hair is pretty fine.  I just use a small amount on the ends.

That was entirely too much 'poo in one post., lol.  I've never heard of conditioner washing, but I don't shampoo every day.

I shampoo every other day (or so, sometimes I go two days between), then once a week I use conditioner after shampooing.  It took about a month for my hair to adjust, and during that month it was kinda oily in between washes, but I've been doing this for years now and my hair looks and feels great.  I mean, except for the grey hair and fact that I desperately need a haircut.

I may have made that up.  I don't actually know if "conditioner washing" is a thing-- I was trying to think of a way to describe what I do to my hair.

  • I used to wash every single day, the less I washed it with shampoo the better I felt it did. My hair is deceptively thick, and my scalp will hurt from not being able to breathe and i have very oily hair. I'm still trying to find something that works the best.

  • I wear my hair up on most days, so I only shampoo maybe 2-3 times a week. Unless I work out/get really sweaty, I just throw my hair up in a bun for the shower so I don't even get it wet. Sometimes I'll do just conditioner.

  • I do not shampoo every day.  I go as long as possible without.  I have the unfortunate conundrum of having a very itchy scalp when I shampoo, but very oily hair when I do not.  I have tried different methods, but I have never tried conditioner on no shampoo days.  Would that battle the greasy hair?

Maybe?  Try putting it only on the ends of your hair.

  • On a weird note- I did read that with the no poo method you have to give your hair a while (like a month or more) to adjust to it. I know some people that had a good time with it. I'm just not sure I want to hassle with all that when I get sometimes 5 minutes to shower.

i have done apple cider vinegar rinses on my hair and liked the results though.

  • I thought this thread was about potty training...
  • with no-pooing, there's a transition period that you will hate your hair during.  washing too much dries out your scalp and drives your glands into overdrive to produce the oils to put it back to normal and it tends to overproduce, hence the greasy hair within a few hours.  that transition period fucking sucks but once you're past it, no-pooing usually produces amazing results.

i had to no-poo to condition my thin, long hair in prep for the dreadlocks.  now I can go 3+ days without it looking greasy at the roots and I tend to only wash 1-2x a week, depending on my activity level.  I switched from BS/ACV to using DR. Bronner's soaps several months ago due to lazyness, but every now and then I'll use BS/ACV soaks for a super deep cleansing.

however long the night, dawn will break.

  • For those of you who can't because your hair gets too greasy, the reason your hair gets greasy so fast is because the daily shampooing causes your glands to overproduce oil, which in turn forces more shampooing. That's the cycle "no poo " aims to stop. I'm not quite no poo, but I've gradually been reducing shampoos and my hair is much healthier and less oily between washes. I'm down to about twice a week. I always rinse with water on no poo days. I am considering going no poo completely.

  • I exclusively co-wash and have for years.  The only shampooing my hair gets is after I have it colored. I use cheap conditioners with cleansing ingredients and no silicones ever.

It works really well for me, but I have really curly hair. I'm not sure it would work for everyone.

  • Dry shampoo does nothing for me except make me feel dirty.  Is there a secret to it?  Over 10 years ago, Pantene had a "dry" shampoo that was more like a paste and it was amazing.  They don't make it anymore and I miss it.

I have a dove dry shampoo. I'm not a huge fan. It actually does absorb oil in a pinch, but it's overly scented or something. I feel like I reek of baby powder all day.
    Edit: wrong brand

    Try baby powder instead.

My hair is so much healthier now that I don't shampoo as often. If I shampoo too much my head and back itch like crazy!

DD has a pretty good spray dry shampoo. I don't remember the brand, but it was purchased at Target. She uses after sports practice when she doesn't have time to shower right away. She's never complained about how it feels and it makes her hair look presentable.

  • I have really thick, curly hair, so I can go about 3 days between washing (unless needed). I don't wet my hair between washes because 1. it takes forever and a day to dry it and 2. the heat is horrible on my hair (it's already fried from straightening it for years). Here lately, though, I've been wearing my hair up in a bun daily to try to let it grow out so I can chop off the split ends.
