Does your family like the 3d ultrasound pics?

I've had 2 extra ultrasounds to check on baby. One at 28 weeks and the other at 33. At both, the tech was nice enough to try to get a 3d shot. Baby was uncooperative the 2nd time but we were able to get one. Now I get it is a little weird with all the placenta/uterus surrounding baby, but DH and I see a beautiful little baby with his nose smashed against my uterus. We showed our parents and they don't seem to have the aw reaction we did. They are not rude by any means, but it is obvious it freaks them out. My MIL texted back " he looks so uncomfortable! Do you have any non 3d pictures". Is this normal? Anyone else have people who don't like the 3d shots? To me he looks perfect.

  • My mom loves them, but still finds them a bit unnerving. She mostly just makes statements like "technology has changed so much since I was pregnant with you!". I think she just thinks it's crazy that we can get images like that nowadays.

  • My sister (who is already my daughter's Number One Fan) wants to see everything. Other than her, I don't send ours out unless someone asks to see them. I made the mistake of sending a pic to my uncle when we were texting about it and he said, "Yeh I'm not a doctor so I don't know what I'm looking at here, but...great."  :-q
  • I find my own 3D photos to be amazing but at the same time kinda weird. We haven't shown them to anyone, but I wouldn't fault someone for being a little freaked out -- especially someone who hasn't been pregnant recently and hasn't been exposed to the technology. It doesn't mean they don't care about the baby.

I'm a late-in-life FTM, I spent many years struggling to figure out what I'm supposed to say about my friends' (2D) ultrasound pictures.  Was I supposed to pretend I even knew what I was looking at? I had no idea. Mostly why I felt no need to pass them around now. God willing, they'll see the baby when she's born.

  • Yeah, my Mom said "She's beautiful!", which was sweet. But when I emailed out one of the good pics to my IL's, I didn't even get an acknowledgement that they received it. I actually asked if they got my email. It was strange because they've been super excited and responsive to other things about her. Must just be because it was in 3D? Who knows. People are weird.

  • My mom loves them, but I think my sister gets weirded out by them because she's the only one who doesn't respond when I send the pics out in a group family text. So I stopped sending them to her. I could see why people are a little weirded out but I think they really are amazing. This week my little guy put his hand over his face and stuck out his tongue during my BPP....it was so cool to see and I got a pic of him doing it!

  • I personally find 3D ultrasound pictures freaky. They just make the skin look like such a weird texture because of the way they render it. I preferred my non-3D ones to the 3D rendered ones (i only have 3D ones because at my A/S we were waiting for the baby to move into a better position so the tech played around and got some 3D ones).

But it's personal opinion I think. And also, as @kitchencolors said, rarely is any ultrasound picture that exciting for non-parents to be.

  • My mom is a nurse, so she is really into the 3D ultrasound pictures and likes to see them.  My IL's are always asking my husband to send them copies as well, but my brothers think the pictures are bizarre!  For me personally, I'm not a huge fan, and I do tend to think they're a little creepy.  But like PP's said, when it's your own kid in the picture, you're going to think it's pretty amazing.  I know I did!

  • I honestly wouldn't take offense. I know you want everyone to be excited, as would I..but every time I can think of where someone has shown me a 3D pic of their baby, it doesn't really do much for me.
My favorite part about the 3D pics is going back and looking at the utero pic vs. baby IRL and seeing how similar they really are.
Cheer up! They will LOVE that baby once he/she is here- I promise ;)
  • Thanks. Makes me feel better. My 5 year old nephew saw the one from 28 weeks and was so scared because he didn't like the skeleton baby. In his defense, the ribs were clearly visible and he didn't have much fat on him so he did look a bit like a skeleton.
  • I personally wouldn't take any offense to it... The 3D pics freak me out too, which is why we decided not to have any done for DS or for this pregnancy and I think a lot of people are freaked out by them.  It's also not as exciting because it's not their baby.

  • I think they're incredible! Everyone Ive shown (friends, family, acquaintances) just goes banana sandwhich excited over them!
  • I think the 3D shots are creepy and I hate having to act all excited when the techs hand them to me. The old-fashioned ones are good for me.
