Diabetics (T1 and T2) - 1st tri control

Just wondering, has it been true for you T1 and T2 ladies that your insulin requirement has decreased (or glucose tolerance increased) in the late first trimester? I'm just curious because of the way my numbers have been behaving.

Sorry to repost this - I put it on my BMB and nobody is weighing in. I probably should have started here! I'm a 28-year-old thin pre-diabetic and I'm really struggling with the reality of it, but I spend most of my time in denial (while still checking my sugars 10x a day) so that's why I haven't been around this board. I really appreciate any input you ladies can provide! Thanks for your acceptance and understanding.

Hi! I'm a T2 and had to decrease my basal insulin twice at end of first tri/ beginning of second. I didn't have to start increasing until last week ( 21 weeks) and I'm still not on as high of a dose as I was for our IVF cycle.

  • I did run low at the end of 1st tri and beginning of 2nd tri.

Now in 3rd tri my requirement has almost tripled, as predicted.

Are you actually on insulin now, or just monitoring your blood sugar? Do you see an endo or anyone who helps you control your blood sugars?

  • TaylorHam86, I have an endo (because I'm type A, lol) and she checks my A1cs every few months. They typically run in the low 5s (5.3 if I don't watch my carbs, 5.0 if I'm meticulous), so I'm still not technically diagnosable just yet. I check my glucose about 6-8 times a day and I'm not on any meds yet, but I was diagnosed with GD with DD and I took glyburide at the end of that pregnancy. She put me on metformin to help with slight insulin resistance (the code she put in was PCOS, even though I don't have that), but I just stopped that cold turkey when I found out I was pregnant. My numbers have been manageable though, until 8.5 weeks when they became positively awesome (postprandials in the 70s-80s, fasting in 60s or 70s - which is unheard of for me).
