3rd Trimester

lovely 3rd tri symptoms

oh man. for the last few weeks i have been having this awful pain in my tailbone. it happens when i am sitting, if i move the wrong way, if im lying down, just about all the time. it feels as if my tail bone is shifting from side to side and it has literally caused tears in my eyes. anyone else experiencing this? i heard that it could be caused by the relaxin hormone that we start producing once you hit a certain point in your pregnancy.
also, the calf and foot cramps are unbearable. anyone else getting them. the tendon in the arch of either foot just cramps and turns to rock as do my calves. I actually woke my DH up from a dead sleep screaming with a calf cramp one night. he seriously panicked and thought i managed to go into labor. any ideas on how to remedy either of these either?

For the calf cramps, bananas. More potassium can help.

The "certain point" in pregnancy when the body starts releasing relaxin is pretty much right after implantation. Most likely, it's the combination of the weight of the baby and your lower muscles and bones stretching/separating that are causing the pain. Or possibly sciatica? If it's bringing you to tears, you need to mention it to your doctor.

  • Does the tailbone pain result in tingling that goes down one or both legs? If not, it's not sciatica; it's probably what I have which is sacroiliac joint pain. Basically, as the ligaments in you pelvis loosen to make way for birth, the joint where your tailbone meets your pubic bone gets weakened. It has gotten to the point where getting out of bed to pee in the middle of the night was really painful and like my whole lower back was one solid piece that wouldn't bend at all.  My doctor has recommended me for physical therapy (which I start on Saturday). Definitely talk to your doctor about it!
  • I had terrible tailbone pain in the 1st tri but now I have more sciatic pain. Definitely mention it at your next appointment if it's that bad. Maybe sitting on the ball or some yoga cat/cow poses can help?
  • no, it doesnt tingle down my legs, so i guess that's good. i have an appointment on monday, and if he tells me that it's the sacroiliac joint, i'll have my husband recommend me some exercises. the perks of being married to a physical therapist :) i have been doing yoga a few times a week and that seems to help a bit too. cat/cow is my go to pose when i am not in public and my tailbone decides to suck lol.
    thanks, ladies!

  • I feel like I'm in the minority but I only get foot/leg cramps if I sit curled up on my legs.

Maybe it's because I'm a perma-fidget, constantly moving, wiggling my feet or tapping but I've never experienced the foot or leg tingling/cramps that a lot of people seem to have. Maybe try wiggling or tapping your feet, see if that helps the cramp?
  • I got calf and foot cramps like crazy with my first 2.  I remember having tender and swollen calves the next day, it was terrible.  It hasn't been as bad this time, but I also upped my water intake when I started getting them, and stretching.  And if you wake up as it's starting, flex your foot, don't point your toes, it can stop it if you do it in time.  My tailbone is nuts this time too, and was not a problem with my first two.  If I lift my foot too high it hurts like crazy, and sometimes if I try to step over something when I step down, my hip will give out for a second.  Fun stuff!

  • I have nerve pain so bad I can't walk 3 steps without hitting the ground and calf cramps but only in the left calf. Weird I know!
