Well, that was awkward

I was just in a baby clothes shop with my dad and the assistant asked how far along I was and what i was having. I told her I had 3.5wks left, it's a girl and that "he's more excited than I am", as in my dad.

Assistant: "dad's do tend to get more excited".
Me: (that was strange) "well he already has a little girl!" (referring to me).
Dad: *awkward pause* No. I'm HER dad. The grandad.
Assistant: "ooooooooh".

Yes my 55yo dad was mistaken for being the father of my baby. I'm 27, not to mention I look exactly like him.

Awkward.

  • cringe, how awkward!
That reminds me of the time my twin brother and I were mistaken as my younger sister's parents (we are 13yrs older than her). It was uncomfortable.

  • LOL.  Very awkward.  When we went on a family vacation this summer this lady at the airport thought that my 15 year old stepson was the father of my DS.

Awkward, for sure, but it is kind of nice that the salesperson has an open mind.  I'm on the flip-side of those type assumptions.  Being 41, I'm sure I'll have plenty of instances where folks think I'm the grandma.

  • My SIL has a story of being out to brunch with her dad ... at some point (while she was away from the table) someone came up to her dad and scolded him for running around with such a young woman.  And they were at some neighborhood pancake house, it wasn't like they were at a candlelight dinner on Friday night.

So hey, at least this saleslady was trying to be nice and chatty. And who knows, maybe last week she was helping a May-December couple and got the evil eye because she assumed it was Grandpa.

FWIW, my mom was 45 when she had my younger sister and she's never had someone think she's the grandma!

  • This happens to me all the time. My dad is also young, 48, but we look so much alike. People always think he is my husband, father of DD. It is so weird.

  • Yea, so awkward.
But unfortunately, today, you just neverrrrrr know!
  • I've had missionaries ask if my mum or dad were home when I've answered the door to them - I'm 30 years old and relatively tall!

@jennish11 I can relate to being an oddly tall tween, I was a 5'7 11 year old.

  • My MIL had my DH when she was 20, everytime they go out together people always think they are dating, or she is his younger sister. And then they are amazed when they it's mother and son. They both used to work together at the same hospital and everyone there thought that as well. It wasn't until I started to bring him dinner and stuff that they would get the picture. It's so awkward.
  • Awkward. The missionaries who came and invited "the family who lives here" to an event this weekend assumed I was the KU babysitter just now. I didn't feel that correcting them was necessary :).

This reminds me of a friend of mine. She's of Indian descent and her husband is white - their children have light skin and eyes. They moved to a white bread neighborhood a few years ago and the women on the block actually assumed she was the nanny one day when she was at the park with the kids. People should really not make assumptions!

  • Ha, the opposite happens to me and my hubs. One lady assumed that my "dad" was taking me shopping at BRU because my kid's father was out of the picture, since I wasn't wearing my wedding ring and all. In other news, she was a twat.

  • Haha!! That is super awkward! When I was on vacation with my family some dude thought my Dad was my brother. I know we look alike, but that would be so weird to have a brother 25 years my senior!
  • I have a lot of siblings and the youngest is 22 years younger than I am, so whenever DH and I brought her out anywhere people would naturally assume she was our daughter. We got tired of correcting them after awhile and would just smile and say "Thanks" when people told us how cute she was.

Then there were those awkward dirty looks people would give me in the store when I was a teenager holding one of my younger siblings...

  • Lol. I have a few of these stories myself. My brother is 5 years younger than me. We went to Walmart when I was 16 and I was wearing my varsity jacket. The cashier told me the my son looked just like me.

Then a few years later I ran up to my dad's cousin's husband (catch that?) and gave him a big hug. I have always done that. He was like a second father to me. As I walked away one fictive other old guys that he was talking to told him shame on him for robbing the cradle. He was like no she's my little girl!!

Congrats to my GP Sister from another mister Bruinsbabe!!

  • Ohhh some people.

I had mutple people assume that hubby is my son. He is 5foot and when he is clean shaven looks very very young. Bright side: I can buy him clothing from the boys department and it is a better price than from men's. He also tends to get student discounts/children's price because the cashier assumes he is young.
  • I helped my dad pick out a ring for my parent's 25th anniversary. At the time I was 22 and he was 50. The guy totally thought my dad and I were a couple and that we're were picking an engagement ring. He kept trying to move us to the wedding band sets, which neither of us understood until he flat out said something. My dad was mortified!
  • My college roommate's cousin married someone 30 years old than her. You never know.

My dad was 40 when I was born and my whole life people assumed he was my grandpa.

I live in an area where there are a LOT of older parents, so it's actually unusual that my 55yo dad is my baby's grandfather. Many of the men his age around here are still having children. I stick out like a sore thumb as a young looking 27 and have been the youngest in all my antenatal classes by a few years.
The thing I found funniest was the fact that we look so alike. You wouldn't need a paternity test. We have the same face. Did she think we were both that narcissistic?

  • When my husband and I were buying our home our realtor thought that my husband and my father were brothers because they looked and acted alike... Talk about awkward haha!!
  • @kitchencolors‌, DH is white and I'm Hispanic. I'm afraid that when Harrison gets older if he doesn't look like me that I will be mistaken as the nanny too. Esp bc I feel like I get told I look young I a lot also. I guess we will have to see.
