FF Prince George

Has this been discussed? Thoughts?

Personally, if any parenting decision is to be criticized, I think forward facing a 9 month old would be it.

Re: FF Prince George

  • Is this a US article? In the UK it's ok to FF at 9 months. Thats the minimum for their law.

If its the incident I read already, happened in Australia. Can't they FF even earlier there?
I'm not too familiar with AU or NZ law, but I do know in the UK their minimum age to FF is 9months. They also have way lower ages for boosters and not seats whatsoever. I know that the US will get all up in arms about it, and I wish they would of thought about being advocates for ERF since they are in the spotlight. However, they are abiding by their laws, which is much different than US laws and recommendations.

My coworker FF his kid at 9 months and was talking about how happy his son is now because he can see what's going on more. I bit my tongue.

I think this is a bigger deal than the writer of that article made it out to be, but a lot of people don't think it's a BFD. I want to make them watch the crash test videos and then decide.
  • I think I remember talking to someone from Australia who said there was a list of "approved" car seats to use there and that no car seat allowed RF past about six months.

  • I can't flame them. Carseat laws and recommendations vary by country.

Both my SILs are the worst with car seat safety.  They both had their kids FF well before a year and my one SIL has my 2 year old nephew in a booster seat already.

But they likely don't even know that ERF is a thing, let alone until age 2 or after. I mean, they can't advocate for everything.
I dunno. I know some moms from the UK. They all know about ERF. It's not a new thing. It's just not as widely known or recommended as in the states. Which is why I thought it would be cool if they were. They also have to deal with laws by country. I know in Italy you don't have to use any car seat at all. This came from a mom I met at the dog park that said she still wished she lived there so she didn't have to use one for her infant.

a 2 year old in a booster seat? Does it have a 5 point harness still, or is it backless? My nearly 4 year old is still in a carseat!

  • Yes to all @HilarityEnsued‌ just said.

Plus didn't we have a conversation here about how just because you are.a celebrity doesn't mean you have to be a role model/be advocates?

  • Celebrities should not be advocates/role models, I agree. However, they are not celebrities, they are royalty. It's their job to be good role models for their people. If this was anyone else I would agree, but that is literally their job. Be a good role model for the people they will some day govern.

This is not their job.  Not literally, not at all.

That has always been the job of royalty though. Back in the day they decided religion, gave money to the poor, and what not. People look up to royal figures and always have.

  • If they consulted a professional car seat tech and that's how it was installed, IDK, I can't get it up to flame them. Especially because international rules regarding carseats are so different from the US.

This was my thought initially too, but international rules of physics are the same everywhere.

I am not a RFer for lyfe (we FF'd right at 2) but this is a bit side eye worthy.  Also, this isn't really a parenting decision- it's a general well being and safety decision.

  • Meh - royalty today is not even a little bit like royalty back in the day. They are much closer to celebrities now than what royalty used to be. Team "pearls not clutched" on this one.
Oh, I get that. My pearls are far from clutched. I only pointed out that I 'wished' they were. That's just the car seat nerd in me though.

You cannot liken "royalty" in the year 2014 to anything remotely near royalty "back in the day".

How would citizens respond if royalty attempted to "decide religion" for them?

Well, the Queen is still head of the Church of England. :P

I have no idea why Tudor Dynasty always pops into my brain when speaking of random royal shit. I'll go sit in my nerd corner. You win.

It's a belt positioning booster- no harness.  My oldest was in a 5 point harness car seat until she was 5.  My nearly 4 year old is still in a 5 point harness and I have no plans to move him to a booster any time soon.  According to my in-laws, I am just "over protective".

And Teen Mom personalities, Bump advertisement models, and the cartoon mother from Toy Story...hm, who else have we criticized for car seat usage here?
We've judged the cartoon mom from toy story? Now I want to watch it and see what's so bad about her car seat usage.

  • @pobrecita‌

The dog can't be expected to know better!

Besides, the dog is a guy, and don't most people judge men/dads less than women/moms when it comes to kids?

  • My family overseas thinks we're BSC for RF at all. They don't even have car seats over there...

    Leave Kate alone.

I can't remember where the flogging happened, but somewhere in the mommyverse I saw some pearl clutching over the son in Dexter being forward facing and out of a carseat at like 2. That was probably carseats for the littles. I peaced out on the FB group a long time ago.

  • His grandma died in a car accident. I would be very pro car seat and seat belt safety if my mom died in a car accident. Regardless of how slowly the vehicle is going some of the time, I'm sure there are times they are going normal speeds.

He's their kid. It is extremely unlikely they'll get into a car accident. They made their own decision. I will not be making similar decisions. I don't agree with or understand theirs, but I'm not going to freak out and complain about their choices all over the interwebs.

  • As one of the boards resident kiwis (who live in NZ) I never saw this angle, and haven't heard of anyone protesting it or anything. I do know that a Plunket technician installed the seat, and I know that the laws and recommendations have changed around car seats in the last couple of months.

The law only says that a child must be restrained until 7 - but recomends untill 11,https://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/07/child-restraints.html

Nothing there about rear vs front facing.

Plunket however recommend basically what you do in the states.https://www.plunket.org.nz/what-we-do/what-we-offer/car-seats/
