Trouble TTC

Trying to Get Pregnant

Hi all,

I am a 26 year old married women. My husband and I have been trying to get pregnant for the past 6 months. I stopped taking my birth control (I was on the pill) last august.Unfortunately, we have not had any luck. I know that we are young and that it could take up to a year to get pregnant. However I am starting to get worried. To make matters worst, I am over weight and I have irregular periods. I have taken the first step and started eating healthier as well as exercising. I know it won't change things overnight, but I am tired of waiting. We are ready to be parents. Has anybody experienced something similar, and if so what did you do to handle it? I spoke to my gynecologist and she said that I shouldn't worry so much right now. She explained that once I hit the year mark of trying we can start testing. I'm starting to feel like I am broken, which sucks because I know stress can contribute to me not getting pregnant. Any suggestions/words of encouragement would be much appreciated!

  • I'm 24 and my DH and I have been trying for a year. I'm just like you: Overweight, off the pill, have irregular periods, and VERY ready to be pregnant. Once I got off BC last March (2013), I went to my doc and she put me on Provera to start my periods if they hadn't shown by day 35. That helped, but my cycle tend to still have a mind of its own. Since my cycle was starting later, it meant I also started ovulating later. I would definitely ask your doctor what you can do about the irregular cycles because it doesn't help when trying to figure out when you ovulate.
During my October 2013 appointment, she wanted me to come back if I hadn't become pregnant at the year mark. Well, I'm still not pregnant and she had me do some blood work 2 weeks ago. Tomorrow, I have to get an ultrasound on my ovaries to determine why I'm not ovulating and will possibly be put on fertility meds. Since it hasn't been a year yet, I'm not surprised your doctor is telling you to wait.
My input: I would go ahead and have your DH do a semen analysis just to make sure his swimmers are ready to go. My DH and I did about 3 months after we started because he wasn't sure if he was fertile and I didn't want to hear he was a year later. Other than that, I would keep track of your cycles, take ovulation tests to help figure out when you ovulate, and definitely keep eating well and exercising.
    Good luck!
  • Hey! Thanks for asking. I did recently have my HSG levels checked and they were low. I had an ultrasound done today and she said everything looked great (which was a huge relief). I am sticking with my OB for now. I figured I would try Clomid with my OB and see how it goes. I know lots of women on here think it's a stupid decision, but I trust my OB and she seems reliable and willing to work with me. She was very informative today and answered all of my questions truthfully. Hopefully it will turn out well. If not, I'll pursue other options.

@BriRic - What do you mean your cycles were starting later and then you were ovulating later?  Do you just mean you're having longer cycles?  Was your actual O date moving that much from cycle to cycle?  Did you ever temp and chart your BBT?  That can certainly help to figure out when you're ovulating.

Also, did you just say your H got an SA after 3 months of trying?  Did he have any known health issues that would indicate he may have an issue?  If not, that is really jumping the gun.

And as others covered, you don't have a level from your HSG, you either have clear tubes or not.  I really hope you're having one before starting Clomid  and I really hope your OB that you want to stay with is at least planning to monitor you properly - CD3 b/w and u/s, mid cycle u/s to see how you're responding, etc.

  • My husband and I had only been technically TTC for 3 mos. When I went in to get a referral for an RE. I had been off birth control and having intercourse for almost two years but just using the pull-out method for protection. So I told my family health provider I had been trying for two years which I didn't feel was entirely dishonest. Basically, I understand when you have that gut feeling that something is wrong even though you haven't reached a year. I knew that I was going to get seen until I said I'd been trying a year and told the doctors what I knew they wanted to hear. Best wishes to you!

  • Sorry. You'd think being a woman I'd know all the technical terms, but I don't. I'm still not familiar with a lot of the abbreviations used on here too. I was thinking HSG was progesterone. No need to call me out on it so much. I still feel like a newbie with everything so be nice.
I had an ultrasound done on everything downstairs and it was all fine (thank goodness). They did the blood tests for my progesterone levels and they were low which is why she did the ultrasound and decided to go with Clomid.

DH wanted to get a SA done early for personal reasons that I would rather not share, but we weren't jumping the gun. He just always had doubts and he didn't want to be the reason we weren't getting pregnant. I didn't think we'd be pregnant by month 3 and we didn't think it was his fault we weren't pregnant because I was still having irregular cycles.

I did chart for a while, but hit the "I shouldn't have to do all this to get pregnant" phase for a while.

I made sure to ask her about monitoring and she definitely said I would be monitored. I know most may think I'm being naive, but I want to hope it'll all work out. Of course if I feel like I'm not being monitored or if I should do something different, I will.
