ALOT of eye boogers. PIP

So for the past 2 days my sons eye has been constantly putting out eye boogers and when he falls asleep I have to pull open his eye lids to open them cause there like glued shut from eye boogers. We have a appointment tomorrow morning with his pediatrician but I was wondering if any of your children have had this before and if it's something I need to worry about

Re: ALOT of eye boogers. PIP

  • Could be a clogged tear duct, I think. A warm rag should help.

  • Thanks guys :) I was worried it might be some nasty eye infection
  • Definitely clogged duct. Breast milk helps, like mummy said. If it gets red or swollen, call the doctor but otherwise it's totally harmless.

  • My LO has been getting crusty in the corner of her eyes too. I will talk about it with my Dr this week.....but last we were in she also said she will be developing tear ducts soon & that may happen. She is 13 days old & I've noticed some tears starting to form & sit in her eyes, not to the point of rolling down her face yet. My Dr also said use a warm washcloth & gently rub the crusties away.

  • My son had the same thing. I *think* the doc gave us some eye drops. Or it just went away on its own.
  • My daughter had this too- clogged tear duct. But it can easily get infected. If there's a yellow/ green discharge, I would take him in. My dr would give me some antibiotic eye cream and it would clear right up. Just keep massaging the inside corner of his eyes, his dr should be able to show you how to help open his tear duct.

(My husband is an eye surgeon) - it is probably a clogged duct but there is always a chance that it is something more serious! Please call your doctor and have it checked out - ophthalmolgy is always happy to check out the babies as eye issues can become serious quickly! I have heard too many scary vision stories in infants to take any possible infection lightly. Again probably nothing, but in the event that it is something you want it looked at early on.
