Hi! I'm actually in Istanbul today on a short business trip, but we're still riding it out in Kyiv. Even during the worst days the security situation on the ground (outside the main square) was much better than it appeared on TV. Violence was very centralized, so where we live, which is about a half hour walk from Maidan, we never felt in danger. For awhile our organizations had changeable tickets for us which we kept postponing so that if there was a mass exodus out we'd have a seat on a plane, but otherwise it's just normal security precautions like having cash on hand and avoiding being out too late alone.
These days it's touch and go with the Russians on the Eastern border. It still feels ok in terms of personal security, but I think if the Russians invade in Eastern Ukraine I'd likely leave with DD for bit until we see what the more long term security situation looks like. DH works on electoral issues, so with big presidential elections in May, I think he'll stick around unless things look really bad in Kyiv.
It's difficult to see the challenges Ukrainians are facing and will face (even optimistic projections expect a massive economic recession), but at the same time it's been inspiring to see them rise to the challenge and demand something better from their government. I just hope in the end they'll get it. Thanks for checking in!
I'm American, DH is Canadian. We both work for international NGOs implementing USAID projects. So tied into the embassy network for somethings (commissary access!), but not others. We don't have to follow state evacuation orders, though I think we generally would.
