Do you believe Pistorius?

I watched the story a few weeks ago on Dateline I believe and I just don't believe him.   From what I understand the part of the city in S. Africa that he lives in has a lot of house break-ins, so having a gun in the house is not unheard of.  He's claiming that he heard noise coming from inside of the bathroom in the middle of the night and the first thing he assumed was that it was a burglar.  If I remember correctly he claims to have called out to his gf,but he didn't hear her, so he shot through the bathroom door not thinking that it was her in there. I dont' buy it.  If he was calling out to her, but didn't hear her, why didn't he try opening the door, if it's a burglar you have a gun and the door shouldn't be locked, if it's your gf then the door might be locked or if it's not, the worse you've done is walk in on her on the toilet.

Am I leaving something out?
Have you've been following, what do you think?

  • No, I don't. Its a very shady story when you knew your gf was over.

What did he gain by killing?  Is it like one of those I'd rather you'd be dead than you be with someone else things. You know mean.  Nothing adds up.  He claims that it was dark in the bathroom, well don't you own a flashlight.  If it's a break-in, then put your prosthetics on so you can at least defend yourself and your gf.
  • I know that his defense is trying to say that he had more fear than another person might because of his legs, but I don't really buy the story.  Why not wait in bed or somewhere else with your gun ready and wait to see who came out of the bathroom?  Why not call the police?  I don't really know all the details, but I wouldn't jump to burglar if I knew another person was in the house with me.  It seems reasonable to assume that your girlfriend who was sleeping over might be in the bathroom in the middle of the night.  Not so reasonable to just start shooting.

I'm not sure it was intentional.

Looking at the crime rates where he lives and he experienced growing up I could see someone being extremely paranoid. Couple that with being freaked out in the middle of the night because you're much less capable of defending yourself because you don't have legs and I can see reacting the way he did. I'm just not sure though.
Ok, but why not put your prosthetic on?  If you're that paranoid why face the fear, put your prosthetics on, take your gf and cell and leave the house and call the police.  It just seems so senseless to me, this poor girl is gone and he's ruined his life over an argument.
  • Not one bit. He was clearly an abuser and probably had some PTSD he hadn't dealt with. Abusers don't think about what they will gain after killing their girlfriend they have rage they can't control and it takes over. That is why abusive relationships are so scary.
