Redness on breasts??? (Update dr. Appt)

Anyone else experiencing this? The entire bottom half of my breasts (both) are red.  This started very early in the pregnancy. I asked the Doctor and he was not sure but just barely looked.  He said my breasts could be engorged. They have grown quite a bit very  quickly.  That was at about 7 weeks. I forgot to ask at the 14 week appointment. I am not sure why. I asked about Thundercloud subs but forgot to ask about my tailbone pain and my breasts...oh the priorities of a pregnant woman ;)  Anyways when I googled redness during pregnancy and breasts cancer pops up. I am not sure that that is the issue since it is both breasts and from the images and I really do not want to jump to worst case scenario and freak out.  I first thought it was because my bras were too tight and bought new bras.  Although the redness faded a little it has never really gone away and it is again really red.  So I was just wondering if anyone else has been experiencing this.  I am going to call my OB tomorrow as well.  Thanks ladies!

Update: so I saw the doc today and they said they can tell me what it isn't...it isn't breast cancer or mastitis or an infection.  Inflammatory breast cancer would not be uniform on both breasts and mastitis would be streaks.  So they told me just to watch it. Said it looks just like another strange symptom of pregnancy, maybe caused by the increased blood flow but aren't sure exactly but not to worry.  So all good news!

  • Since it's both breasts, that makes it seem less likely to be mastitis, but since your bras were too tight it's always possible.

Are the under sides of your breasts just red or hot too? Are they painful? Is it just the color red or is there a texture like a rash? Have you felt extreme exhaustion (also synonymous with pregnancy so not the easiest symptom to use as a marker) and are you running a fever?

It actually sounds to me like a rash, probably heat rash, from growth and new friction and pressure from your clothes. I would switch to a bra without an underwire for a bit if you can, and see your GP or dermatologist to rule out a skin infection or fungus.

  • @Emerald27 It's just the underside.  I'm not sure that they are necessarily "hot" and I have not been running a fever. They are just red, not textured like a rash. I have been really tired but that has been a constant this whole pregnancy.  My breasts in general are sore but the red are not sorer than the other areas. I moved to a non-wire nursing bra a few weeks ago and it seems to have decreased the redness a bit but the last few days it has gotten bad again. I'm wondering if my breasts are just still growing and I'm starting to outgrow these bras.  I put some diaper rash cream on them tonight (my sisters suggestion, she's a nurse).
  • Did the diaper rash cream help?

It does sound to me like a heat rash, but if it doesn't improve after a few more days I would definitely have it looked at, just to rule out fungus or bacterial rash: sometimes when our breasts grow and the underside touches our tummy more or sweats more or even is just constricted within a tight bra, those rashes can appear. Depending on what's causing it, you'd use a different treatment (topical creams and such) to get rid of it. :)

The diaper rash cream idea was a great one, and I would also sleep shirtless if you can, to let the ladies "air out." ;) I hope it gets better soon!

Could it be pressure related?  If I don't sleep in my soft bras, when I wake up one or both sides of my breasts are purplish and mashed looking.  If I sleep supported however they are fine.  Maybe the new weight of them is literally giving pressure to the underside.  Maybe you need a more supportive/comfortable bra?

Here's the one I've been using at night and during the day if the girls are super sore:  https://www.magicbodyfashion.com/en/comfort-bra

It doesn't look like you can get it in the US but maybe you can find something similar?

  • I had this during my first pregnancy.  It was like a rash but it wasn't raised or anything, my skin just turned red.  My OB told me it was a yeast infection on my skin (WTF?) and to put lotramin on it.  But that didn't help and it didn't itch or anything so I was skeptical about that from the start.  It didn't bother me so I just left it alone and it went away about a week after I delivered.  I also developed a similar "rash" on my face under my lips later in 2nd tri.  It also went away after I delivered.  So so weird.  I don't have either so far this pregnancy.

  • @emerald27 They looked a little less red this morning so I'm thinking maybe the cream helped. I went ahead and made an appointment with my OB for tomorrow afternoon just to give me peace of mind.

@archi35 yes I have been using  a sleeping bra at night for some support. Last night my sister told me not to use it and we put the cream on. Today they were a little less red.

@lmorris14 thanks for sharing that. That makes me feel a little better. I was thinking maybe yeast infection as well.  I will find out tomorrow I guess.
  • In the beginning of my first pregnancy my breasts were red like you were saying and later in they turned into stretch marks that were red. They also started to itch after I noticed they were stretch marks.

  • I've had redness under both breasts for a few weeks now. A bit of baby powder before putting on my sports bra--I've give up on underwire--has helped a great deal. Pretty sure it's heat rash, which I've never had before.

  • If it was a yeast rash, you would know because it would be very itchy and the redness would have a clear area. (I deal with yeast rashes under my breasts quite often). It doesn't sound like you have that.

Definitely don't jump to cancer right away! Our bodies are changing SO much during pregnancy and this could be one of those things. It doesn't sound like a symptom of breast growth; have they gone up in size considerably?
