DS doesn't want to sleep flat on his back

Advice if anyone's been there please? DD was such a dream baby and didn't give me any problems at all. So now DS is a completely different animal. I'm trying to do the same routine I had with DD bc it worked. Dim lights around 8, give a soothing bath and a nighttime bottle, swaddle and in the crib you go. But he gets all pissed off laying in his crib. If I hold him he will fall asleep or if I put him in his swing he will. I'm wondering if it's because he is laying flat? Anyone have any experience with this? Otherwise he is a good baby, it's just he seems so uncomfortable in his crib and it makes him fussy.

  • I used a sleep positioner early on & laid DD3 on her side in that. She disliked flat too. Maybe it is the motion of you/swing though.

  • None of my kids liked being flat on their back. Julia and Drew needed to be held and nothing else would do, Emma was good in the bouncy chair.

This is my fear. So what did you do? Where did they sleep? Or did they just not sleep? :(

Sassy baby sleep positioner is the one we had. I think they've actually recalled most of them, supposedly they're dangerous. We used and loved it, felt totally safe. I couldn't find it new though when she was tiny, not that one.

Yeah I'm googling and it says they can be dangerous, like everything else. Ugh. They sell them though, I haven't looked at the sassy one exactly but I see others on babies r us's website.

  • Doesn't a rock and play have an incline?

  • DD2 slept on her side a lot in the beginning.  She was a fairly awful sleeper and I think a lot of that is because she was uncomfortable with reflux.  As soon as she learned to roll, she would flip to her stomach every night. I feel your pain.  DD1 was a much better sleeper and DD2 is just a different bird.

  • Rock n play. My boys hated being flat on their backs. They didn't become good sleepers til they could roll over and sleep on their tummies

  • I was thinking I would maybe try laying him on his belly.  I just get nervous.  This is so hard.  I am going to look into wedges, positioners and the rock n play.

Right now he is sleeping peacefully in his swing.  I might even consider getting another swing for the upstairs if that will keep him sleeping...

    Thank you!

  • DS 2 is sleeping like a rock star but I know it is all because of the rock n plsy that thing is magic!
  • None of mine slep flat the first couple months. My first slept in the bouncer or swing, the second on her belly, and the third in a rock n play. I will use the rock n play with the new baby as well-loved it and highly recommend it.

I'm sure there is some great reason as to why they're super dangerous but I couldn't see it. There are so many things that are dangerous unless used correctly, I wouldn't worry about it to be honest.

Personally I would rather them sleep with a wedge in their crib, slightly propped up on their side instead of in a rock & play or swing IF they will do so.

    Why?
  • DD slept in her rock and play until 9 months. As a newborn she wouldn't sleep more than 45 minutes until we bought the rock and play, and then bam, 3 hours.

  • Dd2 slept swaddled in a swing or bouncy the majority of the time until she was 9 months old. It really wasn't a big deal and she "transitioned" to a crib fine. In the early months i don't worry too much about where they're sleeping and neither kid slept in a crib at all until at least 3 months. Then again, I happily rocked & nursed to sleep for over a year.

I agree DS can sleep anywhere as long as he sleeps.
  • Rock and play.  Neither of my kids loved being flat on their back and the rock n play was seriously the best baby product we bought.

I had a scary experience with one of the positioners.  It keeps them on their backs at an incline, which is great.  However, they don't fit tight to the bassinet.  One night, I was wiped out and needed a break from the crying.  DS was in the bassinet in the sleeper.  I let him cry for a couple of minutes to get my wits about me (you know when your nerves are completely frayed and you need to take a few breaths). When I went to get him, he had scooted his way up the back of the sleeper and his head and neck were hanging off the edge of it at on odd angle with his face pressed against the side of the bassinet.  He couldn't free himself.  It was one of the scariest moments, and I felt awful for days about taking that 5 minute break. That positioner was in the garbage immediately.

These are the stories I'm afraid of.  I feel like if I know it can be at all unsafe, even a little bit, I still won't be able to get any sleep even if he does.  So it may be worthless to us.

The rock n play seems to be getting rave reviews...I'm definitely going to check it out.

Yeah I just looked up the kind you must have had, I could see how that would be scary!

That's not what I had though, there was no incline and I used it to prop her up a bit on her side, not to keep her flat on her back. It looked like this one.

Yeah, this one you posted is different than the one that I had.  I don't think I would be so concerned about this one.

  • Another rock and play. I literally wept when dd started sitting up in it.

  • We just put a rolled up towel next to Logan and prop him on his side with that. We also found that warming up his bassinet with a heating pad before putting him down to sleep really helped. You take the heating pad out before he goes in there, of course. The warmth factor really helped.
  • Z was a side sleeper in her bassinet. When I laid her down I'd put her back on the side & she'd kind of bear hug her blanket.
  • DD also slept very nicely from early on, so thus is here say, but on another board, they were talking about raising the head of the crib and it would help if the baby was having a bit of an issue with acid reflux.
