Breast feeding question

Hey all, My daughter is 4 weeks tomorrow. The last 2 days she has been crying non stop, with the only thing quieting her being my breast. I thought maybe it's colic which scares me, but I wonder if I'm not feeding her enough? I usually feed her for 10 mins on one breast, and she just suckles after that or falls asleep. This just started - is it a growth spurt? I offered both breasts to her twice today and she went right to sleep after - can I over feed my baby? I don't see her turning down food... She did dislatch herself today both times... My milk supply is good. I pump once a day and get 1.5-2.5 ozs, plus feed her all day. I can her her gulping and sometimes she needs to stop and take a breath before continuing. Any thoughts? And before you ask - Pee and poops are good - right on schedule both before and today. Advice welcome!!

Re: Breast feeding question

  • It sounds normal to me. Get comfortable, have snacks and water available, and feed her on demand.

Does she unlatch after ten minutes or do you stop her?

  • I agree with previous poster.  Sounds totally normal.  Make sure you're getting plenty to drink and eat.

Also, something I noticed, if I don't have a clock near by I tend to under-estimate how much time my LO is actually spending at the breast, maybe this is something you're doing too?  Make sure she's really done eating.  Undress her, as this may help her to stay awake longer and to eat better.

  • I don't think you can really overfeed her. If she's not hungry anymore, she'll stop. As the PP said, feed her on demand. My LO is 4 weeks and she usually feeds for about 10 minutes every hour during the day so what you're saying sounds normal to me.

  • I don't have a clock, so maybe you are right that I'm underestimating it. Glad it's normal. Thank you so much! @KariB - she feeds every hour? You are a trooper!! :)
