High-Risk Pregnancy

No appetite concerned about nutrition

I will be 13 weeks on Wednesday.  I have had 24/7 morning sickness.  My nausea wakes me up at night.  I don't always vomit but I am always queasy.  I can not stand the thought of food and sometimes even liquid.  I started out in the first few weeks being able to eat even when feeling sick.  At about 6-7 weeks that changed.  I have only been eating what sounds the least repulsive.  Sometimes that is just a baked potato with sour cream, sometimes it is a plain quesadilla from Taco Bell.  Mornings are usually toast or yogurt.  I do not eat much fruit or vegetables.  I find the thought of fruit and vegetables nauseating and if I force myself to eat the things that make me sick to think of eating, I end up throwing up.    My doctor gave me Zofran, but I don't find it very effective.  I take my prenatals every night before bed with a little milk (dr recommended way to take them) but I am concerned with the lack of fruit and vegetables, and that I may be doing my baby harm.

Re: No appetite concerned about nutrition

  • It's very normal to not have an appetite when your so early in your pregnancy. Believe it or not but baby is fine right now because he/she will take your nutrition. I would try to at least drink a shake or eat crackers eventually you will get your appetite back and more :-)

  • I had HG, and felt similar until recently (now at 24wks) I took 8mg of Zofran every 6hrs, which helped some. I still usually threw up 2-4 times a day. I tried to drink as many liquids as possible, and then ate toast and other bland food items every 1 1/2 - 2hrs. I've lost 10lbs in my pregnancy, but baby has been growing well, so he's not worried about my weight loss. I hope you start feeling better soon!

  • I started out same way around 7 weeks I had horrible morning sickness. (Threw up every single day until 25 weeks) zofran didn't exactly help and I was having bad side effects from that) I dropped 10 lbs in 1st trimester. I am now 29 weeks and up 4 lbs from my prepregnancy weight. Baby has been growing in track and Dr was not concerned.
  • Thank you ladies!  It is so nice to hear from others who have experienced this and have babies that are doing well :)

  • Yes.  You might feel like you're dying but baby is going to thrive just fine.  At this point, the nausea/vomiting is normal and even considered a good sign by some.  Keep doing what you're doing to get through the day and eventually that appetite will kick in.  The lack of fruits and veggies isn't a big deal at this point, either.  Your prenatals are helping combat that.

  • Girl I SOO know what you're going through. I have HG too and, at 25 wks now, it seems to be getting better. I lost around 10 lbs total then started putting it back on slowly as of last week. I was SO concerned about my appetite because I struggled with an eating disorder prior to this baby fun. So the fact that I had no interest, was CRAZY nauseous and couldn't eat, and vomitting a lot, the weight loss was very unsettling even though my lil bug (the baby kicking me as hard as she can at this very moment) was growing and seemed fine to the drs. Ugh..THEN I found a post on here with similar concerns and reading through the comments section was like watching someone get eaten by a bear..they ripped her apart for complaining about weight LOSS. It was sad.
I just came back on to give it another chance and I'm glad I saw your post. Don't worry...babies take the nutrients from your body so it's really more you that suffers from lack of nutrients. I'm still nauseous most of the time and vomit sporadically but it's worth it. It's so much better in comparison to before that I really can't complain. Enjoy and marvel at the fact that there's a teeny tiny baby in there...how cool is that?!
