I wish I had gotten a picture, but I will just have to describe it.. We had our ultrasound at 18.5 weeks, and I'm 22 now. At 17 weeks I was hospitalized because I had an awful infection. At the hospital, while doing an ultrasound to check on baby, I asked the tech if she could tell yet, and she told me she wasn't 100% sure, but thought it was a girl. Then at my 18.5 week US, the tech showed us and said it's a boy! We are so excited either way, but were SHOCKED! lol.. Now that I'm out shopping and preparing for my little boys nursery I'm getting more and more nervous that the US didn't look like a penis. Basically, the picture we saw was from the bottom of his two legs and in between it looked like a box, square shape and it looked HUGE for an 18.5 week fetus lol... I'm considering paying to get another US, but was just wondering other moms experiences or if that seems right for it to look like that.
You should trust the tech from your A/S. Just because it didn't look like a penis to you, doesn't mean it's not. The first tech at the hospital even told you she wasn't sure.
A trained tech can recognize boy parts pretty easily once they are visible. Maybe the first tech just couldn't see in detail because baby was in the wrong position to get a good look. At that point, I'd say it's pretty safe to say the tech is correct, but if you're feeling unsure, see if you can arrange for an elective ultrasound. They're usually not very expensive.
I'd trust the a/s from the ultrasound tech. Here's a picture as well as a drawing the tech provided to us at our a/s at 19 weeks. Pretty distinct that it's a boy, their privates look like turtles while girls look like hot dog buns.
I don't have a pic of my DS at 17w on me (when we found out), but a penis is hard to miss, especially at 18+ weeks. Also, babies have in uteruo, and are born with, swollen genitals. Really, I wasn't prepared for what my DS's would look like when he was born. I also vote for listening to the A/S Tech as opposed to the ER Tech

I'm with everyone that said go with the a/s tech. You were in the right time frame and with someone who looks for these parts every day. Boys are pretty unmistakable. My mom looking at my u/s said she couldn't see a penis, but I had no problem seeing it. Pretty much if there is anything sticking out down there, it is a penis.
If you are than paranoid, don't rip the tags off clothes and go for a gender neutral nursery and pick out a name for both sexes.
We had our A/S Friday and found out we're having a girl. As PP have said, we saw 3 very distinct white lines. Nothing protruding - not even a little bit.
lol. i definitely sounded insane by that question..
we did book an ultrasound just to be sure before I spend anymore money on boy stuff. We waited with #1, so this time I was so excited to not do the gender neutral thing - and now I'm psyching myself out. Will make sure on April 24.
