FUMING... why are people so dumb?!

I just have to rant about a parent at my school. I work at a private preschool in the 1 year old room. Last week one of our kids was out for three two days because they were sick. They showed up to school on Friday and seemed fine. Well come Monday morning half of our children are out with Hand Foot and Mouth. It's also in our two year old room and three's. A grand total of 18 children are out with it. Poor guys.

Well before leaving work today I found out that the child who was sick last week HAD hand, foot and mouth and never reported it to the school. So they are the sole reason that 18 children are out sick. I am so irritated. If they had just called the day they went to the doctor and found out we could have tried to sanitize everything, I don't feel that this would have kept anyone else from getting sick but I do feel it would have cut down on the numbers.

I mean come on people!!! Do people not know they are supposed to let their daycare provider know if their child has a highly contagious virus? Let's just infect everyone else. ~X

That stinks. It says kids can be contagious with that sometimes weeks after their outbreak. I hope they got doctor clearance

That is terrible and selfish of them. I can't believe the are cool with infected numerous kids because they couldn't stay home with their sick kids. That is worng.

I completely agree! I want that mom to know what she caused. I know that's terrible but I'd feel so terrible!

Hand Foot and Mouth is awful, and yeah it takes at least a week for it to go away.

Poor kids. That's just not fair to them. And I also have parents complaining to me about "How did we let this happen".

A kid in DDs class has it. There was a note posted on the door today. I heard the parent talking to the school yesterday and it kind of sounded like the doctor gave him something to give to the school. DD has not had anything contagious like that yet so I have no idea how it actually works. I did however manage to get pink eye from someone in DDs class the day after I saw the note on the door even though DD didn't.

And that is one reason I will be a SAHM. People don't care about others. When they get sick from someone else they get upset. But they don't even think about others when they are sick. I understand the whole needing to get back to work to not miss anymore days. BUT if you know that you or a family member is highly contagious with something. Have some respect for others! It is not fair to the rest of the world to get what you have. That is also a reason I have H get the flu shot yearly. Because he may not get it but guess who does? ME! So it does make me mad.

That's awful. I teach sixth grade and two weeks ago our team of 65 students was missing 32 kids because of the stomach bug. They were dropping like flies, throwing up ini the classrooms and hallways. It was awful and I was terrified being pregnant. The nurse sent out a letter to parents telling them to be cautious and that a child cannot return to school until 24 hours after the last time he/she threw up. I had kids come back to school who had thrown up that morning or in the middle of the night before. I was so upset that some parents are putting everyone in danger. I sent those kids right back to the nurse! I don't blame you for being upset!

DS had that last year. Thank goodness he didn't get any sores on his mouth or hands/feet, but he did have a scary fever and an awful diaper rash! He isn't at daycare so it wasn't hard to isolate him, but our doctor warned us to be extra careful.

I had never heard of it before and was grateful to the doctor for giving us the info we needed to keep our friends safe (how long to stay away, etc.). If the doctor hadn't told us, we might have not known what to do - is it possible that these parents weren't told how contagious this virus is? ...just trying for benefit of the doubt. I realize it's much more likely that they didn't want to use up leave time.

This happens all the time!!!! Parents putting other children at risk. So upsetting.

I am not sure. They did go to the doctor and got the confirmation that he had it. I can only assume the doctor had to have told them how long he'd be contagious for? They also have another child so I'm sure they told them to be careful.

That stinks. Especially HFM, it's way worse than just a cold/bug. And I'm sorry, but if parents have limited time off they need a back-up plan. Sending kids sick to school/day care isn't ok, especially for their sick kid! (also stepping off soapbox..)

That could definitely be the case, they are esl. So there could have been a miscommunication.

Just frustrating because as you know, it's such an awful thing. Especially if it's in their mouths.

Ugh, when I worked in daycare it went through the whole school too. Not fun. But I know it does often spread before you notice the symptoms, so it's hard to say who is at fault for these things.

My pet peeve was always when sick kids were brought in totally drugged up, with parents knowing their kids fever would spike as soon as the meds wore off. No morning meeting is that important.

This. While I agree that it's shitty of parents to send kids to daycare when they have a fever or are throwing up/have diarrhea, HFM is a little different. DS had it last year and we did not even know it until the rash broke out at which point he wasn't even contagious anymore. He never ran fever he was just really cranky for a couple of days so I thought it was teething. I honestly did not see any valid reason to keep him home from daycare until it was too late

If it makes you feel better, my sons preschool was constantly sanitizing. I was always walking in on at least one of them somewhere cleaning something. But he still picked up colds every month or so, it's just too easy for diseases to transfer with so many kids in close quarters I think. :-/

People with hand, foot, and mouth disease are most contagious during the first week of their illness. However, they can sometimes be contagious for weeks after symptoms go away. Some people, especially adults, who get infected with the viruses that cause the disease may not develop any symptoms. However, they can still spread the virus to others.

So I'm sorry but they very likely infected the children the friday they brought their child back to school. It had only been a day or so since he'd been diagnosed with it.

None of the other children got it till the next week. All of our children have now gotten it.

We sanitize on a nightly basis all the toys. But I mean sanitize like throw all the stuffed animals in the wash, wash all the dress up clothes, etc. There are things that only get done every so often because there's no need to wash the stuffed animals or dress up every night.

I was trying to say that I dont think they should have brought the child back so soon and they should have notified the school.

Just frustrating because of how yucky it is. I just feel bad for all the children who've now gotten it. I've dealt with HFM but I've never been this bad.
