Daycare WWYD for teachers

Hey ladies!

DH is a teacher and I've been thinking about what to do this summer with LO.  Last summer we kept him in FT because DH was finishing up grad school, although he did skip a lot of days or would get picked up early.  This summer, DH wants to keep DS at home.  It would be nice to save money and have DS spend time with his daddy, but I'm worried about a few things.  The first and biggest one is that I'm worried that DS will be away from school for so long that it will be hard to adjust when DH goes back to work.  I hate dealing with separation anxiety and I worry it will be a problem when he goes back.  I also worry about him getting out of their routine, missing his friends and the socialization.

The "per day" rate at his DC works out so that if a child is there 3 or more days, its actually cheaper to pay for FT.  We could send him 2 days a week and we'd save a little money but its not a significant savings compared to FT.

I'm curious to know what other teachers do during summer vacation?  Thanks!

  • Right now we are planning on sending them 2-3 days a week to give us a break so we can get home stuff done, they socialize and stick to routine and no crying in September. They will hold our spots regardless.

  • We always move down to part time. It is the best of both worlds for our family. It gives us some flexibility, saves us a good amount of money and keeps all of us in a basic routine of going to school. This year both kids will be attending 2 days a week. We've done both 2 and 3 days a week depending on what else was going on for our family this summer (new baby, etc.).

I keep LO home with me all summer and he returns in fall when I go back for teacher workshops.   I keep LO busy with activites and field trips to the zoo and the pool and what not.   I also started getting him into some toddler camps and activites as soon as he was old enough.

Daycare holds his spot as long as I pay 100 in the spring.  I have never had an issue with him having trouble adjusting back in the fall.  I keep him busy, and we enjoy the time together.

Dh and I use the money we save over the summer and put it towards any debt we may have accrued over the year if there is any or put the money in savings.

Edit- I should also add that I am fortunate that my mom can watch LO and I have some neighbor girls that like to babysit if I ever need to go do things where I can't bring LO.

  • We;'re at a new center this year and I'm pretty sure we just have to pay to register them again for the fall, which they apply to the 1st tuition anyway.
First of all, we can't afford to keep them in during the summer.  I really don't know what will happen if the daycare doesn't hold our spot, I guess if in 2 months they get that filled up we'd have to go with another daycare.
My LOs are 2 and 4 and I've never sent them in the summer.  We do tons of activities, play dates, get togethers with family, ect.  One of the reasons I am a teacher is to have summers off.  I love having this time with the kids and would never give it up.
My kids whine every morning as it is, especially my 4 year old, so I'm not too worried about that.  Plus DS will be 2 1/2 in September, and I found at that age they understand alot and adjust pretty well.  IMO the summer is not that long, I'd hate to send them to daycare on a beautiful day when we could be at the park or zoo so I could relax or keep them in their routine.  It will be too soon when they'd rather be with their friends in the summer than with me.  Right now we're pretty happy spending the time with each other.
