Question about pumping

My daughter is 8 weeks and she has always nursed well with a nipple shield. The past couple weeks, she has been extra fussy at the breast and pulling off after only 5 minutes. Usually I can get her to feed enough so she's satisfied after only a short time. But the past couple days, she has been pulling off and fussing, but still acting hungry so I've given her a pumped bottle and she'll take an extra 1 or 2 ounces. My question is when you pump to replace the feed how long do you pump for? I can usually get 4+ ounces in 10 minutes, but I don't know if that's long enough. Also, how many ounces and how often does an 8 week old typically eat? Thanks for any help/support!

Re: Question about pumping

  • ETA: I don't know why you framed your question to EPers only; you don't EP and lots of EBF moms also pump occasionally.

That's true! I was just thinking if I had up end up exclusively pumping as a result of her not latching. Thanks got the response!

  • You might want to try to wean her off the nipple shield. It can slow down the amount of milk they get, so i wonder if that's what is frustrating her. I was given a nipple shield to use when DS was a newborn because he had trouble latching (it was such a pain and i regret not seeing another LC for help getting off it immediately, but anyhoo). What worked for me was to start my DS nursing with the shield on, and once he had some milk and wasn't crazy hungry and frantic, i'd take off the shield and try to relatch him. You could also try nursing her after after pumping a little, since the pump helps draw out your nipples. • I was told to pump for 10 minutes if it had been 2 hours. 20 minutes for 3 or 4 hours. If I'm nursing and pumping (which is most days) just to pump until the milk stops spraying. I agree with PP about doing a weighted feed to see if your LOs getting enough or needs the nipple shield. With my twins they started getting fussy and rejecting the breast and it was all tied to being lazy and wanting bottles (little boogers didn't want to work for their milk!). I went to an LC and got a supplemental nursing system that incentivized them to suck. After a week or two they didn't need the SNS and were back on the breast.
