Surprise Screening

I had my 12 week appointment with my NP Friday during which we discussed screening for Cystic Fibrosis and doing a quad screen when it was time. She was also concerned about my ultrasound report that said I had a "possible septated uterus". She was going to discuss with the doctor and call me. No phone call came and I figured all was fine, until I got a phone call today about scheduling an appointment next week for genetics counseling and my ultrasound. I made the appointment, but immediately called my NP's office to find out what was going on because I hadn't gotten a phone call and now I was worried. Hours later, after not getting a return call, I called the office where my ultrasound had been scheduled. They were kind enough to tell me that it was an NT ultrasound (nuchal translucency). I still can't be sure if there are any concerns with my potentially misshapen uterus.

I calmed down a bit, but we had not requested a nuchal translucency screen. I'm so angry at my NP right now I could spit. I'm not even feeling like it could be a miscommunication about which tests we wanted because otherwise she would have said "someone will be calling you about an appointment". Am I totally way off base here? Oddly, as pissed as I am, we will probably keep the appointment just so we can see our little guy or gal. I'm also seriously considering dumping my doctor.

I would wait to talk to your NP and see what happened. It's possible she ordered just an ultrasound to visit the septated uterus issue and the scheduling people just wrote-in NT since it's done around this time. Basically you have your NP telling her/his office secretary to make you an appointment, that secretary calling a scheduling secretary at the place where you are having the ultrasound, and probably another person speaking to you about it. Things get lost in translation.  For the NT, many providers schedule the blood-draw first so you can get the results right after the NT scan. If nobody talked to you about that it is very possible this is an appointment for a regular ultrasound and things got mixed-up.

  • Turns out it was a simple communication issue. She was scheduling an ultrasound to check out the "shape" of things and figured since I was going to be there, that we might as well tack on the NT ultrasound. I'm just irritated by the lack of communication.
