  There is certain lengths, but I don't think it really matters, but thickness does. Normally you can find a "set" of like 3 different sizes. They would be smaller, maybe size 7,8 or 9. Since dolls and stuff like that are smaller knits, you need a thinner needle for the thinner yarn. Baby blankets are normally knitted in 11's, 12's or 13's since they are bigger knits with thicker yarn. Hope that helps.

  Or even double pointed needles.  I'd think the knitting little weird-shaped things would be very double-pointed-needle territory?

  
  

  But what @Beary+Ghastly said - the length doesn't matter, you can knit something tiny on super long needles (not so much something huge on tiny needles though ...).  It really does come down to what size (or diameter) the needles are.  For something like dolls, you're probably looking at the small range - down around the 3 range.

  Honestly, he might be better off getting her a gift certificate to a nice yarn store. I know it sounds less personal, but if she's an active knitter, she probably has a lot of needles and is only missing specific ones, so his chances of buying her duplicates are pretty high. I know that I love getting to go into a yarn store and get what I want without feeling guilty about spending money on it.
