Prune Juice?

My DS is 9 weeks old and weights 11lbs. He is FF with Enfamil AR. because of all the rice in the formula he can get a little backed up. Yesterday at his 2 month check up the dr said to give him 2oz of prune juice mixed with 2 oz of formula at his first bottle in the morning. I was talking to my sister who has a son the same age and she gives her son 2 tbl of prune juice with 2 oz of water. So now i'm second guessing myself on what the dr said. was it 2oz or 2 tablespoons. His dr is off today so i'm not able to call.

Has anyone ever used prune juice to help your baby go potty. if so how much did you use?

Re: Prune Juice?

  • There must be an on-call doc you can speak to.

There was but when I called there wasn't a note in his chart that said how much. And the other dr said he wasn't sure since each baby is different I'm going to call back tomorrow

  • Our pediatrician has us do 1oz prune juice to 2oz water which is equivilant to 2 tablespoons. So your sister may be right.

  • One dr in my group said 2oz prune to 2 oz water. Another said 4 oz straight apple or pear. Undiluted bc it's the sugar that gets the bowel moving. Grace is also on AR but I think she poops better now. She was every three days pooping grey on good start so we were anticipating constipation.
  • My son is also on AR hes 7 weeks now, last week I tried the target brand of AR and it it backed him up pretty good (pebbly dry poop) for a few days so I gave him 1 oz of water mixed with 1/2 teaspoon of brown sugar and went within 2 hrs and no more dry poop .. I also switched back to enfamil ... I guess I'm stuck with the more expensive stuff
  • Grace was that way now that I think back. I just thought it was the AR but it was the target brand. Then I was out and bought enfamil and she's had great poops. Darn not worth the ten bucks I saved. I am trying to submit it to the insurance but not sure it will be covered. I am thankful she is not on meds or seeing a specialist so if its not covered its ok.
  • I use enafmil with my LO and instead of using the prune juice I use the actual baby food. I make my daughter 4 ounces and the. I put an extra half an ounce of water then put two baby spoonfuls of the baby prune food. Try that and tell me how it goes.
