Hospital stays and work

My daughter is hospitalized for pneumonia and a virus and cannot leave until she doesn't need oxygen. My husband and I are teachers so we don't really have time off. After tomorrow I've used all my family sick days. Has anyone been in this situation? How did you work it so you could be with your child and keep your job? My daughter is my first concern but I certainly need my job.

  • Have you talked to your supervisor?  Might they let you go "in the hole" on sick days, and use some before you've earned them?  I'm not sure what is possible in your workplace.

  • Do you have a family member nearby who could be with her at the hospital during the day until you get off?  I agree, this should qualify for FMLA.  It may be unpaid time off,  but your job will be protected.
  • I agree with the PPs - this should definitely qualify for FMLA.  Also, you say you have used all of your sick days - does your DH have days he can use?  Maybe you can at least alternate being at the hospital.  I know it would be incredibly difficult for my LO to be at the hospital while I was at work and I am sorry you are going through this.  But that may be a compromise that will get you through until she is home.

  • I've used all my family sick so my husband is going to use some sick and her grandpa will do the day shift so I can report to work. Crazy getting ready for work at a hospital
  • My daughter was in the hospital with RSV last month. Luckily, we only had to stay for 2 nights and then they sent us home with oxygen. She was on the oxygen for an additional week and couldn't go to daycare until she was off oxygen. Luckily, my ILs are retired and watched her while we went to work. Not sure if your hospital will give you the option of continuing oxygen at home. The LO is still sick, but there is something about being home and she seemed to start improving once we were home. Good luck!!!
