Burping while BF'ing

When feeding from a bottle, I akways waited until LO paused to take a breath and then burped her. But what about while feeding directly from the breast? I would rather not break the latch (now that the both of us finally got ahold of this), but do I wait until she is completely done with that side before burping her? How do you all do this?

Re: Burping while BF'ing

  • Wait until baby comes off naturally then burp and offer the next side. Sometimes baby can get real fussy at the breast or have a bad latch because they need to burp so if that's the case I would take her off to burp then re offer the same side.

This exactly. Either wait till they finish one side and then burp, or they will get fussy at the breast, at which point you could delatch them and try burping.
  • No need to break LO's latch.  Honestly, I do not actively burp LO unless he is fussy.  He just burps on his own otherwise... sometimes right after he is done eating, sometimes 20 minuets later, or never.  If LO has reflux issues then burping is more necessary, but if not I would just follow her lead.

  • Yeah, I do the same as everyone has already said.  Also, one of mine will pop on and off like he can't quite get the latch right.  He'll always have a big burp and then latch fine afterward.
