Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

WWYD

Traveling to Mexico in January with our LO who will then be 2 1/2.  The two options I have for a return flight are a 4 1/2 layover or a 1 hour layover.  Obviously the 1 hour layover is more ideal but it doesn't leave us much time to get through customs and on to the next flight.  Which would you choose?

Re: WWYD

  • The 4.5 without question.  1 hour layover is not enough time to go through customs.

  • Not the one hour. Last time I had a one hour layover, my flight was delayed and I ended up literally running across the airport in flip flops to make the next flight (the flight attendant said if we had walked we wouldn't have made it). That was a domestic flight. I couldn't imagine doing that with a child in tow. 4 1/2 hours sucks, but there is a lot of stuff to look at in an airport, and going through customs will probably eat up a bit of that time.

  • Another vote for the 4.5 hour.
  • 4.5 hour. Use the time to let your LO run, eat something, get a diaper change (if still on diapers). DD did great with the long layover because she got to burn some energy and move around!

  • I'll be the UO, and say the one hour. I just travelled with my 20 month old, and we had a one hour layover. I thought it would be crazy, but you get to use the express lane at customs and it makes for a much shorter travelling day for LO. Then you can rest once you get to destination, and let LO run around.

Definitely the 4.5 hour layover. Having traveled internationally through U.S. customs probably close to 30 times over the last 15 years, 1 hour is not giving yourself enough time to get through customs and make it to your connecting flight. I usually look for connection times of at least 2 hours - longer if you are not a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. You need time to not just get through immigration and customs, you will also likely have to change terminals, check in luggage for your connecting flight and go through airport security.

Now, if you have frequent flyer status on the airline you are traveling on and there are multiple flights after the one you are trying to catch, then you could risk it because there is a good chance you might be able to get on another flight with stand by. However, given that you are traveling with a child, I would opt for the longer layover. It sucks but maybe you can eat at a restaurant, walk around the airport etc.
