September 2012 Moms

If you had to redecorate LO's room now....

Would you do your LO's bedroom exactly the same, or make it a little "older" or more neutral now that they're not babies anymore?

We're moving in a couple of months. Right now DD's room is a very pale, almost greyish pink. It's hard to describe, but it's not a bubble gum pink. I love the color and will probably use the same one. I had a custom made dust ruffle and valance (and paid way to much on Etsy - rookie mom move) that have that pink, a dark pink, brown and lime green. It is not a baby print - it's floral and swirls. Her new bedroom has 2 windows, so I'm trying to decide if I should get another valance made, if that's even an option. I don't know if we can even get the same fabric. And now that her crib is at its lowest setting you can't even see the stupid dust ruffle.

Re: If you had to redecorate LO's room now....

  • I would probably take the opportunity to re do Colby's room, since it was originally keagans nursery and we didn't change much. Keagans room we just finished turning into a "big boy room" so I would keep that. It sounds like your daughters room isn't very baby ish, and the color pallet could easily be used in a bigger room. Maybe just get new window valances?

  • The boys are getting a superhero room next. We won't paint or change curtains because the colors work for superheroes. We will just take down some of the wall stickers and put up superhero stuff.

  • I also LOVE the decal I have over her crib: "Dream Big, Little Girl." Love, love, love it. I am debating whether I should get another one or let it go.

  • Ethan never had a bedroom until October 2013, when we moved from our loft to an apartment. I decorated his room at that point and I like it. I will change it either when he gets a little older or if he and future baby have to share a room.

We're in the same boat.  Except by the time we're in a house we can paint, DS2 will be almost 2 1/2.  I will do something a little bit "older" than what he has today.

I am going to try to make the wall colors something neutral without being boring and then switch up the themes overtime to coordinate with his taste by changing curtains, bedding and decals on the walls.

DS1 has a red wall in his room to coordinate with his Cars themed room.  We let him choose at the time since there was a baby brother on the way (and I had Mom guilt).  Now in our new house, we won't be painting any walls red.

I kind of feel bad for the guy buying our house.  ;)

  • I love DD's room, it is probably my favorite room in the house! I would do something different in a new house, but more for fun than because I don't like how it is now. Her current room is not babyish, just bright and happy.

  • Lo's room is currently purple and lime green. With the names of the two girls who used to live there painted (behind the dresser, but still.)  So, yeah.

I think the landlord is going to repaint it this week though!  But for Lo's next room when we actually by a house, we'll probably stick to neutrals again. (her nursery was brown walls.)

Oh man, that sounds like an interesting combination

  • DD's room was never very babyish.  She has chartreuse walls, a multi-color stripe rug and white wood furniture.  I love her room.  I purposely didn't have anything babyish because I didn't want to have to buy or redo anything in a couple of years.  She is keeping her room exactly the same, aside from switching the crib to a bed in a couple months, until she is at least 8 years old.  By then, I hope to be in a bigger house.

  • G's room is gray walls and pink accents so I think it can be as baby or as grown up as we make it. I would do a lighter gray on the walls. It was darker than I had envisioned.
  • DH painted Luci's room yellow and green.  I think I would nix that if I could do it over and do brown walls or something neutral.  Her room was always more little kid that baby, but I have never just been really in love with her room.

If we move, we will do neutral walls and removable decals, but nothing major.

@MomtobeNJ could you turn the dust ruffle into a valance for one or both windows?

Omg, yes! I mean, *I* couldn't do it because I can barely sew on a button, but what a good idea!

  • I love L's room. There isn't really anything 'baby' about it. Her walls are bright green, her curtains are yellow, white furniture, and polka dots for her cubes. She will stay in there until a sibling comes along. Then she will move to the guest room that currently has light gray walls, so anything goes.

  • B's room has an off white trimmed border and then a darker bluish/turquiose on the bottom and lighter shade on top. I love his room! We didn't make it baby at all so I wouldn't have to redo it when he go older. He'll be moved to a different room once we have LO #2 anyway.

  • It sounds like the room is not very "babyish" so if you can turn that skirt into a valance as suggested, I'd stick with what you have and decorate a different room in your house instead with the money!

Congrats on the move!  We move into our new house next month and DD has never had a room - she shared with DS so I'm looking forward to decorating her room.

I love DDs room so at this point I wouldn't change anything. It's not very baby-ish though, it has a vintage feel. The colors are white, grey and a soft pink, but the pink is just in accent pieces so it's not overwhelming. I'm trying to create a nursery for DS that can grow with him too.

Eta: when DD is ready for her big girl bed we are giving her a really beautiful day bed we already have, which is a very dark wood. Her dresser is a vintage french provincial dresser that my H re-did in white, but when we move in the dark wood bed I want to paint the dresser a fun color to coordinate with whatever bedding we pick out.

If we moved right now, I wouldn't change anything. When we moved here from TX, we were renting the house so we didn't put a lot of the stuff up that we had in James' old nursery. Then we decided to buy but at that point, I didn't want to redo his room. I am waiting another year when Leo is out of his crib and we have the boys share a room. Then I will redo the room so it is "their" room and not "James' room".  I keep changing my mind on what I want to do though, so it may never actually get done other than adding another bed :)

I'm happy with how the kids' room is set up decor wise. There isn't a theme and the colors are neutral with a few pops of muted primary shades. I wouldn't change it.

That said, I did rearrange the entire room yesterday (baby sitter was here). I changed furniture location and decluttered/removed a lot of the "baby" items. It's a toddler room now. I'm very pleased with it.
I have been dying to do this, and moving will be a perfect opportunity. I can't wait to purge. Not just her room either - it's amazing how much crap you accumulate.

    @LyndseylovesHugh Have you found pillows?

I wouldn't change anything, her room is very simple and not super baby or themed.  I think she can grow into a little.

  • With number 2 on the way, we just moved DD to her big girl room and completely redecorated. I never really got the chance to make the nursery what I wanted so we took advantage of the move. She was in a green room with butterflies and some fairy pictures but now she's in brown and pink with a chair rail and monkeys are more the theme since she loves them.

  • I think if I had the chance to fully redecorate I would go less neutral. Her nursery is a green and brown jungle theme, which is what DS is going to use when he is out of the bassinet. We're currently in an apartment so we aren't going to be painting the walls or anything, but the sheets/comforter on DD's big girl bed (in what will be her "new" room) are purple and white with a floral pattern.

  • We moved when E was about nine or ten months. I kept his Eric Carle
prints and his bedding. We could paint in the new place, so we painted the room a bright orange (haha. Not as hideous as it sounds.).

I think his room is fun as he is a toddler. He recognizes the Eric Carle photos from books and likes to talk about them. When we move, I'll probably do his room a little different since he will have preferences and likes that we can think of.

  • I went with a very neutral theme with Sherbet orange and Navy. I really wish id have waited to know the gender. Since we moved in one week before she was born I was in a huge hurry.

Now, I'm in love with a dragonfly and bug print.  Oh well, I don't plan on changing anytime soon.  If I happen to find something to match her orange walls then it will be bought.  ;)
