Opinions Needed! Opening presents at party?

Hi everyone!  I'm hoping you all can give me some advice on what to do here ... We're having a relatively large (50-60 people) party for my daughter's birthday and I'm feeling like it's a lot to ask to make everyone sit through her opening presents.  How have you all handled similar situations?  Do I just have her go for it and open them all no matter what?  Do I have her open a select few for posterity sake?  Having a hard time coming up with what I think seems right ...  Thanks for the help!

Re: Opinions Needed! Opening presents at party?

  • Personally i wouldnt open them during the party. I am also have a large party.

  • That's my thought too ... So, I guess the next question would be how do you go about addressing that at the party?  Should I say something ... thanking everyone for all of the gifts, and so on ... I just don't want to seem rude.  I can hear my MIL now... LOL :)

  • We had 11 adult guests -- 4 couples, and 1 single, so we opened there, but no way would I do that with a huge crowd.

  • I vote no...gift opening is so boring.

  • I've never been to a birthday party where gifts were opened, I didn't even know people did that till I heard about it here on TB. I definitely wouldn't do it with such a huge crowd. Thank everyone individually if you can. If not, don't stress about it - I'm sure they are aware you appreciate their gift and presence.

    This.

  • My DD opened them at hers and so will DS, but their parties are smaller...probably 30 people at DD's and only about 22 at DS's. In your case, I'd wait to open them. Just be sure to send thank you notes out promptly!

  • With my son's first birthday, we opened gifts at the party.  There were only a couple little kids there, so it worked out ok.  Plus it was at home.  But I just went to a 3 yo party, where there were 8 other 3 yo's.  Opening gifts in front of the kids was not fun for them at all.   So based on that, we didn't open gifts at the combined 3 yo and 1 yo party.  It was a good decision, because we just didn't have time. The party was at a park and there was another party starting right after ours and we just didn't have the extra time.  How did I address it?  I just kind of brought it up in conversation, that after the last party, I decided it wasn't worth trying to open gifts there.  I didn't want to upset the little's.  No one missed the gift opening as far as I can tell.

I have to get the thank you notes out ASAP though!

  • We had about 55 people and opened the gifts at the party. At least where I'm from, people expect and want to see the gifts opened. I had the same anxiety as you, however - about it taking forever and being boring to watch. I had the party at a location where kids could play and be distracted, and there were areas adults who didn't want to watch could go sit and have a coffee drink. I opened the presents for DS and went fast, it took about 20 min total.

  • We inadvertently did not open gifts @party last weekend; had about 40 ppl. I was afraid it would seem rude, but it worked out just fine! There was so Much going on there wasn't any time to Sit down & do it. We plan on sending thank-you's pretty quickly.
  • We had About 70 people..the entire party was over whelming so I really didn't want to do gifts but we had a little lull waiting for coffee to brew before doing cake so we just did a few presents to buy time so it wast too bad
  • Thanks for all of the great feedback ladies!  Much appreciated!

  • We have about 50 people coming. Out plan is to not open gifts but if we have time, I may consider it.
