This vaccine "debate" is really starting to piss me off

I have a friend whose 5 week old is in the hospital right now, with pertussis.

I re-posted a pic of her baby in the hospital with her words (about a paragraph) about how this is why vaccinating is important.

I should have known better than to put it on FB, now all the anti vax nut jobs are bombarding the damn post and it just pisses me off.  This kid is sick and could DIE, and your bitching about your your kid got a "vaccine injury" *EYE ROLL* from TDaP and that's why you'll never give it again?  Excuse me while I bitch slap you into next week.  I would much rather my kid have a leg that hurts on rainy days (Yes that is in fact the so called "injury") than be dead.

Re: This vaccine "debate" is really starting to piss me off

  • Yeah, the friend that said that is someone that I've been planning to clear off of my FB for a while.  When we move she's getting the axe.... but for now we're in the same "social circle" and it would create a whole lot of awkward to cut her out, I'm just not up for the drama...

  • This just shows even more the irrationality of the anti-vaxers.  Do they realize how it doesn't even make sense to worry about rare vaccine reactions when we're trying to prevent babies and children dying?

Of course there is a rare possibility of a vaccine reaction, but the benefits outweigh the risks.

I had a vaccine injury... I developed ITP following my MMR vax when I was 5. My platelet count dropped from 100,000 plus to less than 10,000. a nose bleed would have been fatal. I spent a weekend in the hospital. I STILL GET VACCINATED for everything that is recommended. I get a few extra blood draws after to make sure that I am OK. I would rather risk ITP (which I clearly survived) again, than risk getting something super awful that is preventable via vaccine.

and I hope your friend's baby is OK
I'm sorry you went through this. Your story is awesome though because you see the risk vs benefits personally and still do it!

OP- I am really praying for your friend. Poor baby. I feel bad for her if she sees the posts on your page from the nut jobs when she is personally effected. Ughhh......

You know, Polio causes sore legs too.

    NOW WHAT ANTI-VAXERS?

A friend of mine recently posted an article about the measles outbreak in NY, and an anti-vaxer wrote, 'Yeah, but only 12 people have died. That's not that many."

Dude, measles was practically eradicated in the US before you assholes thought you were better than science. You are welcome for herd immunity. Now stop fucking ruining it!

    Tell that to the families.

Plus...this just is so ridiculous...if she feels that way, what's wrong with risking vaccination?  Shouldn't she be willing to risk it for vaccination if she's willing to risk it with the disease?

  • My MIL had polio as a child (one of the last known cases in the U.S.), and it left her confined to braces and now to a wheelchair at 60-something years old. Our kids will damn sure be vaccinated.

  • OP- I hope your friends baby is ok. Thats about as scary as it gets! I dont understand how modern people can seriously "debate" vaccines. Children in 3rd world countries would love to have the access that we have to vaccinations. Can I ask- did she get the TDaP (Dtap?) vaccine while pregnant? I'm just wondering how effective it is. I am obviously going to get it at a later OB appointment but am just curious.
Yes, she and her husbands, as well as her parents and inlaws/close family were all current on boosters etc... She's almost certain it was contracted from a child at their church :-(

I saw that earlier and literally laughed out loud! "Free lollipops promote unhealthy eating habits" I love The Onion

Thanks everyone for being so kind, I seriously could not handle the crap being spewed this morning and needed some like minded folks to commiserate with.  While sweetie is still in the "danger zone" doctors feel her chances are good because they got her to a hospital in time.  As of last night she was still turning blue and going limp from coughing fits, someone has to constantly be at her side to get her at the right angle and pat her back and help her through them :-(  So scary and sad to see her all hooked up to monitors etc...

  • I'm so sorry for your friend and hope her LO makes a full and speedy recovery. I couldn't imagine seeing such a young baby suffering from pertussis. I might jump on my soapbox here and suggest we moms ask/insist that other adults who will be around our new babies regularly have the booster DTaP in advance of meeting the baby. I think boosters are suggested every ten years.
    Already done.

OP, I'll be praying for her LO, and for the antivax parents out there.

Its a bullsh*t risk to bet your kids health on diseases you, yourself have been vaccinated against!

  • I heard this story a few days ago and thought of the antivaxers and their nonsense: https://www.npr.org/blogs/health/2014/04/07/300232844/measles-at-a-rock-concert-goes-viral-in-a-bad-way

Basically, a woman who was contagious with measles went to a Kings of Leon concert in Seattle. she also went to a Starbucks, out of sushi, etc. all while spreading the disease around. It stays airborne for hours. The State of Washington released the woman's whole schedule in an effort to prevent further transmission. Now if she had just been vaccinated in the first place...

  • I'm not going to lie, I get freaked out about vaccines. Im nervous every time my daughter gets one and watch her like a hawk for any effects from it. But I STILL get her every recommended vaccine. As much as I'm nervous about her having a reaction to the vaccine, I'm way more nervous about her getting one of the terrible diseases the vaccines prevent. Until there is any CONCRETE proof of vaccines causing something worse than the diseases they prevent I will continue to vaccinate my child and future child. I just can't understand the risks these people are taking.

    Word.

I had a vaccinia reaction to the smallpox vaccine a couple years ago and essentially had smallpox sores all over my body. It was one of the most painful experiences of my life.

I didn't give a single shit, though. A vaccinia reaction is easily treated, though unpleasant. Smallpox isn't, and like these other diseases we're vaccinated for, has a stupid high mortality rate.

The answer is duh. Vaccinate everyone. Otherwise, in my ever-so-humble opinion, you're a selfish, uninformed, conspiracy-obsessed prick. Also you don't accept science and its delicious truth.

ETA: Unless you legitimately can't be vaccinated for legitimate medical legitimate reasons. Legitimate.

    ...legitimate.

You guys know who you are.

My brother and I were both vaccinated against smallpox at the same time.  He didnt have a "reaction", but his constant "attention" to the site caused it to spread all over his arm.

The only vaccines I absolutely dread getting: Rabies and Anthrax!  They hurt like absolute bloody hell!  I get a reprieve this year, thanks to LO!

    ETA: End quote. Thanks mobile.

Yeah, there were a few in my group that were really terrible about keeping their smallpox blister bandaged up properly and caused it to spread. I apparently got mine because I had undiagnosed eczema. Whee.

And gawd yeah. Anthrax is awful, and it doesn't help that it requires four boosters. Takes your whole arm out for like 3 days. Hooray for you not having to get it this year!

Having said all this, vaccines still rule. XD

Vaccines don't cause illness or disorders, however they can 100% trigger them if your child has a predisposition. I work in the biomedical field and have dealt with thousands of moms whose children became ill after being vaccinated. There are safe ways to go about vaccinating. Check out generationrescue.org - they have a safe vaccine guide that is pretty solid. Just educate yourself, as being an extremist on either side of the fence is never a good thing.
  • OP, I hope your friend's baby is okay!

My "favorite" anti-vax sentiment is "BUT THE AUTISMS!", which is especially offensive if you know and love someone with ASD, but really I think anyone can see the craziness in rather having your child be dead than on the spectrum.

  • *sigh* I have a now ex-friend that goes on anti-vax rants on Facebook rather consistently. Today someone else chimed in that the over 20 cases of measles that have popped up in our area were all kids that had been vaccinated….wrong. Our county has the highest outbreak in the state, all because of this anti-vax nonsense.
I hope your friend's baby gets well soon. When my DD was born, nobody was allowed to visit aside from parents and grandparents because the pertussis risk was high. It's a very scary thing.

  • Vaccines don't work, typically they only have about a 70% succession rate which isn't high enough for me to inject that poison into my children. I'd rather work on natural immunity than these artificial chemicals be put into my little babies bodies. For those of you who do vaccinate, no judging...but hoping your kiddos don't want up with any terrible side effects from the formaldehyde, murcery or monkey brains.

    Facepalm.
    I. Just. Can't.
  • I work with preschoolers and on our intake form there is a vaccination line. One parent checked "not up to date" with the reason "I don't want (child) vaccinated". And when our director asked for details he said because he didn't want to submit him to the pain of the needles or make him cry unnecessarily. Umm...a bit of crying and pain vs. a fatal illness? I'll take the crying! We already told my parents and sister to get their boosters and DH just needs to pass it on to his family
  • No... that is making the rounds, and a very similar situation (I shared it on FB as well) but my friend is up in the Baltimore area.

Her little one is doing a lot better, and might get to go home this weekend!!! So we're praying hard for her!

  • Soooooo I dont know how it happened with my response to @jillielizabeth ended up all late and after that little round of crazy.

Oh my shit.  @craftymamma111  My children have never had anything other than a low grade fever (under 101) from a vaccine.  I hope your children are never permanently paralyzed by polio.  OR permanently infertile from mumps.  OR DIE from Tetanus, Diphtheria, etc...  My vaccinated kid is protecting yours, not you.
