Cloth Diapering

For those who CD at night

Hi there! I am new to this board. I have a 7 week old in CD's. I have been using them at night as well with great sucess- no leaks or anything. My question is- do you feel LO sleeps better in cloth vs. paper? I am probably overthinking things but started to wonder if LO feels more wet in cloth and therefore doesn't sleep as long? Any opinions out there?

Re: For those who CD at night

  • Thank you! I kind of figured this was the case. I mean- what about when paper diapers didn't exist? Thanks for the input.

  • I always feel bad leaving my LO in a fitted or prefold without a liner, although I'm pretty sure it doesn't bother her at all! For my piece of mind I will put her in a stay dry diaper at night and I always use our fleece liners on diapers that aren't stay dry. All that wetness just seems like we would be asking for a rash.

Our 10 week old has slept in a workhorse fitted, a flat, a prefold, and a sposie.  I have seen no difference in her sleep length.  We prefer the fitted b/c I feel like it holds more and it's easiest to change in the motn.  If you are worried/wondering about your LO feeling wet then you could use a fleece liner.

ETA- Our 15 mo. old sleeps worse in a sposie because she leaks every time she wears one so her onesie/jammies/sheets get wet.
  • The biggest hurdle would be clean reliable data collection and getting a large enough population to test.  And uniformity of the type of diaper tested.  Oh gawd, the engineer in me is coming out.  There is so much more I could type.  I'm itching to actually do a test like this.  OP, I use a fleece liner in a fitted which I guess helps keep him dry for a while at night but it does nothing by morning when the entire thing is sopping wet and it doesn't seem to disturb him at all. I guess if your kid is really sensitive to wetness you would have to use a pocket or AIO with a stay dry lining all over.

  • I use a red edge work horse fitted and a thirsties or blueberry cover. She wakes up happy :)

  • Prefolds and hemp for my toddler, she sleeps 11 to 12 hour straight. The only time she wakes is if she's not feeling well or she falls out of bed (her bed is on the floor so it's not a huge fall).

My infant sleeps in a fitted for 12 hours. His nose bothers him more than wetness. I usually have to break out the nose Frida at 5 am to unblock it and he nods back to sleep quickly.

  • My baby sttn in cloth, so I don't notice a difference.  I do use stay-dry at night though.  Even if it doesn't wake her up, I can't imagine it feels nice in a soaking wet diaper.  Have you ever sat in wet pants? Yuck That would be so cold!

  • When DS had a stubborn wetness sensitivity rash, he actually did worse in certain brands of disposable. It seemed as if the crystals heated up when they absorbed moisture, and the heat was uncomfortable for him. This phenomenon seemed worse with some brands than others.

Obviously it wasn't an issue in cloth with a fleece liner, because cloth doesn't use a chemical reaction to absorb pee.
  • All my overnight fitteds have velour in them. This makes them feel pretty dry through the night. Sposies at night always wake my kid up. He sleeps 12+ hours at night. When he wears sposies he always wakes up early in a big ole puddle.

Also, it kills me when people refer to disposable diapers as "paper" diapers. There is about as much paper in those as my lap top.

  • I tried disposables when I was desperate and sleep deprived and didn't notice any difference. My kid just was and is a crappy sleeper.

  • I use both and there's no difference in how he sleeps. I always use a stay dry liner, though. I just know I wouldn't want to sleep with wet cloth on me, so why would he?
  • Thanks for all the input ladies! I will look into fleece liners/stay dry liners
  • I don't think she has ever noticed a difference, but there is usually a wet spot on her jammies in the morning when she has slept in a disposable. She sleeps 10-12 hours. We rarely use them, though.

She is a small 10 month old, and wears a red edge Workhorse with a NB prefold as a doubler, with a Blueberry coverall. It's bulky, but she dosent seem to notice that, either. I had issues with the stay-dry liners, so I don't use them.
