SS 1.5 cm dilated @28 wks, what to expect?

Saturday I was having a lot of Braxton hicks, about 1 every 5 min for an hour. We started driving into town and they stopped. Went home, they started again, so I drank a ton of water and went to bed. Felt fine since, and thought I would be ok waiting til my appt today. Told my doc about it, and how the same thing happened two wks before my dd was born, so I was worried. Well turns out I'm 1.5 cm dilated, but cervix is still long. He says baby will be coming early, but hopefully no sooner than 32 wks. He told me to cut back on work and relax as much as possible. I trust my ob, but really thought with this news I would be on bed rest. So has anyone else gone through a similar situation of being dialated so early? How long did your cervix hold out? I'm trying not to worry, but of course I am.

  • I am sure that is scary to hear, especially if you have had one early before.  However, I have a friend who has been walking around 5cm and 100% effaced for several weeks.  She is not due until 4/21, and her last baby (a big guy, too) was 4 weeks early.  So I would just listen to your OB and take it easy, but not worry about it TOO much.

  • You can stay like this till the very end!! Take it easy and listen to your body and your OB.
  • As someone with recurrent spontaneous preterm labor...
I would say listen to your doctor and listen to your body. I'm actually surprised they didnt order a fetal fibronectin test, something to stop the contractions and steroid shots.

If something feels just a little bit off, go to L&D.  You can walk around 1.5cm for weeks longer or you can go into active labor.

If you're really concerned, you should ask your doctor for additional testing.

@MrsP419 - I'm surprised they haven't taken your friend into L&D.  My doctors have always said dilation over 4 cm is grounds for admitting.  Even without consistent contractions.

  • @becomingmommyagain, I am surprised too! It is her 4th kid so I guess they all know what they are doing, but I would be going crazy.

  • With my second (this one is my third baby) I walked around at 6 cm for more than a week. I was exactly opposite MegK82. I had tons of contractions during the day but then everything would calm right down at night. I have no idea when I started dilating since I didn't get any checks until after due date. Finally at 10 days past my due date, the midwife broke my water (I was 8 cm at that point and not in active labour) and my DS was born 65 minutes later.

You can go around quite dilated for weeks before you actually deliver. But if you are feeling like something is off then go in to L&D for sure! But I wouldn't worry over your doctor's reaction. I'm sure if he was worried he would have discussed it with you!

  • Thanks everyone. I trust my doc, but it's nice to hear some real life stories too. I just wish these Braxton hicks would stop because they make it hard to relax.

  • They were about 5 min apart, not painful but uncomfortable. Of course when I went to see my ob they stopped. They started again last night off and on and kept me up from about 1 am, and now that we are heading to the hospital they have stopped. I don't know what the heck is going on.

  • They hooked me up to a monitor for a bit and only traced one contraction. Cervix is the same. Told me to rest and drink lots of water and come back immediately if contractions start again.

That is cruel!  You must have been on pins and needles that whole time!
It was annoying. They put me on bed rest at 33 weeks because they thought I was at risk of preterm labor. They took me off at 36 weeks and told me I'd walk the baby right out and the next time they saw me it'd be in L&D. Every week after that they were like "you're still here!?!?! How have you not had this baby yet?" It got annoying and frustrating hearing that for 6 weeks and still no baby. In the end DD was born at 42 weeks, 3 hrs before my scheduled induction.
