Suddenly giving up swaddling! Help!

Yesterday I had just put LO down in his crib for a nap and heard him crying right after I left the room. I came back in to find him rolled face down in his swaddle against the side of the crib. No more swaddling for us I guess! He has not ever rolled back to front before so this came as a complete surprise. We are not ready to give it up though .. He does NOT sleep well without it. He is such a wiggler. I write this now at 5 am after the worst night of sleep we have had since 6 weeks old. Any suggestions for easing this transition? Anyone else have to do this abruptly? Did LO get used to it eventually? I am so worried that we will never sleep again.

Re: Suddenly giving up swaddling! Help!

  • There was a huge thread about this on my other group and everyone swore by Merlin's magic sleep suit. It's not super cheap but people were obsessed with how great it works for transitioning out of swaddling.

Good luck, as of this week we are in the exact same boat

  • One thing I would suggest if you don't have one...is a breathable bumper. DS's legs keep getting caught in the side slats and waking him up when he's no swaddled. We use a sleep sack and after a couple of nights he's doing fine. Naps are harder for some reason, maybe just not as sound of sleep.

@KateMW Does your LO also get his head/face against the slats? I'm curious about the breathable bumpers because S is such a mover and not swaddled. He gets his legs and arms through the bars a lot, but also has his head and face up agains them. The other morning I walked in and he was asleep with both hands grabbing one of the bars

@KateMW‌ I'm so glad you brought this up. We have a mini crib so LO doesn't have as much room to roll around. I put him in the crib while I got some things done wrong the house and he just kept rolling around. But he kept getting his feet stuck. He has yet to roll when he's in the sleep sack and I'm hoping it'll make it less likely he'll get his feet stuck. But I think we will probably need the bumper.

We just stopped swaddling as well. We used the Halo sleep sack with the swaddle around his body when we first put him down and he would sleep did a few hours just fine. But then had would wake up every 15-30 minutes. I eventually would give up and put his arms in. We did this for a few nights. Then we did one arm out for a few more nights. Then we just quit... I put him in a cotton sleep sack without the swaddle and he slept pretty well. We've been up every two hours for the last couple weeks but I think it might be the 4MW.
Good luck! It's not easy but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.

He still gets his feet caught in thew sack but less than without it. The bumper will be here tomorrow, so I'm hoping that fixes the rest of our issues.
  • Thanks for the suggestions. He is super cranky this morning, probably from not sleeping well last night. I have contemplated swaddling him and just watching him so he will get some sleep! Maybe it will help to try the one arm approach first. I looked into the Merlin Sleepsuits but I think they say not to use them when they can roll over so it probably wouldn't last long. The breathable bumper is a great suggestion, thanks.
  • We've been trying to break the swaddle for over a month now :(  We usually start him unswaddled but end up swaddling after a few hours so we can actually sleep.  He hasn't rolled in bed yet, but I know it's coming. It isn't just that he doesn't sleep well without it...he also pulls his pacifier out, and wakes up looking like he rolled in a rosebush from scratching at his face so much (and I trim his nails daily).
