Changing wakeup times

LO seems to be waking up before i can get myself up for the day. He has been waking up between 5:30 and 6 lately. How can I move his wake time later?
His schedule is 3hrs of wake times before his naps. He is napping twice a day. I do an average of 3-3.5hrs before bed depending on how long his last nap is. He generally sleeps 1.5-2hr naps. Any moms got anything for me? Thanks.

Re: Changing wakeup times

  • What time does he go to bed? Also, what makes you think he is up for the day at 5:30? I ask because sometimes B wakes up wanting to eat but wants to go back to sleep afterwards even though it's 6 or 7am. I only figured it out when MH gave him a bottle one morning at 7 and put him back down in the crib so he could finish doing something he started. When he came back, B was asleep again.

  • I'm following this.

My LO now wakes up at 6-6:30, which is too early on my work days. I know he's awake for the day when he's babbling to himself and playing in his crib.

He generally goes to bed around 7 or so. He's getting the recommended amount of sleep so I just assumed (dumb me) that he's up. Since he sleeps about 11 hrs at night and about 3-4hrs of naps its in the 14hrs of recommended sleep time.
This morning I let him chill in his crib from 6-6:30 and he just played with his blankets and animals. The other morning DH went in when he fussed for a bit at 5:30 and he tried to rock him and pat him back to sleep. DH said he started talking to him (which I heard on the monitor) and said there was no way he was going to lay back to bed.

  • Ah, ok.  That's a tough one then.  My kid apparently loves to sleep a lot (not necessarily in continuous stretches, but we're getting close).  The one thing I noticed is that B is going to get about 15 hours of sleep between naps and bedtime each day.  He won't sleep a whole lot more and I don't want him sleeping any less.

You're best bet might be sloooowly moving his bedtime a few minutes later each night.  That may or may not work.  Also, leaving him in the crib a little bit longer in the morning when he wakes up at least gives him a chance to fall back asleep and/or gives you a few extra minutes to wake up and do what you need to do.

As a FTM, that's about the extent of my advice.  Sorry!   :(
  • Thanks ladies. It's rough especially when we travel to Chicago on a bi-monthly basis to visit family and they are one hr behind us. We are up at 4:30-5:30am and ready to hit bed ourselves by 9. Lol. It doesn't make for a fun weekend
