Natural Birth

Doula gift

So we have arranged for a doula-in-training to attend my VBAC. She has been amazing so far! She came w me to my last midwife appt and will attend hypnobirthing classes w us.
Since we will only be her 2nd or 3rd birth, she isn't charging us, but I would like to have something for her when she visits us PP. Ideas?? She is a massage therapist, so I'm leaning toward an amazon gift card or something like that.

Re: Doula gift

  • I had a doula in training with my first baby - I gave her a Visa Gift Card.  She is a pre-natal yoga instructor, so I wanted to give her something she could use on/for herself.
  • Loading the player...
  • I gave a cash gift since LO came early and I was not prepared with a giftcard. This way my doula could put it towards something she needed and wanted. I think any type of gift card would be great.
  • Okay so follow-up question to this. My doula cost me $1k out-of-pocket. Would a gift on top of the fee still be acceptable? I didn't even think about this, and now I'm starting to wonder... :\
3 early losses in 2013, but so thankful that our first baby boy is due 3/29/14! <3

When we paid for a doula I did not get her a gift. Though I wasn't super thrilled with how she helped during my sons birth.

Also follow up - how much would be a good amount?? We went the doula-in-training route bc my DH is out of work right now and I'm a SAHM.

  • We gave her a gift in the amount of 20% of her fee. For us she did an amazing job and we really feel like she made our birth a success. She knew several natural birth friendly;y nurses at the hospital and had us request one. She also got me through a tough time when my body was pushing and I was only 8.5 cm dilated. We felt like she deserved a decent amount. HOnestly though I think anything would be fine and there is no right amount. Give what you can/want and I am sure your doula would appreciate it!
  • We gave our doula $50 extra above her modest $250 fee (she was training as well), and gave her a little printed picture of LO that said "I love my doula" on it. As a doula myself now, I certainly don't expect anything above my fee. Just do whatever you feel is right and I am sure your doula will appreciate it because it came from you! :)

  • Our doula was well worth the money we paid, but she still was a lot of money.  I did get her a small gift though and a nice card because I really liked her and appreciated everything she did for me. I got her a beautiful tree of life necklace from Etsy and she loves it.
