32 weeks and really suffering from acid reflux!!!

I have had heartburn from the day I found out I was pregnant and probably around 28 weeks I started with acid reflux especially at night. Literally right as I fall asleep I have to run to the bathroom to throw up. Either I throw up OR sometimes it won't come all the way up which is disgusting. I am taking 2 Zantac 150 a day, I eat smaller meals especially in the evening and I am using an essential oil that has helped some. Anyone else have any other ideas? I have had a wonderful pregnancy up until this and I am exhausted because I can't sleep.

  • Yes I have and she will if I want her to but I am really trying to avoid taking anything at all. I didn't even want to take the Zantac but I read all the reviews and it is okay. The prescriptions that could be written aren't suggested unless it is really bad. So I am really trying to avoid that route if possible. Trying to be as natrual as possible.

  • That stinks, so sorry.  I agree with @ugabamafans, and I'd also look at changing up your diet a little to see if that makes a difference.  Maybe you'll find some foods that minimize the discomfort.  GL!

  • Gaviscon is the only one that works for me. I'm mobile so I can't link, but search this board for this topic, we've had a few threads on it lately where ladies have give some really good answers including a lot of natural remedies.

I find eating vanilla yogurt or ice cream helps better than milk. If I don't have that I have milk with ice. Also, drinking peppermint tea or certain pregnancy teas with peppermint and spearmint (I am currently drinking yogi woman's mother to be tea).

    Feel better!

  • Prevacid in the morning, Zantac at night, it is the only thing that works for me
  • You are definitely not alone on this one. I didn't have a bit of heartburn with my first two pregnancies, but it and the reflux have been terrible this time around. For me, Pepcid AC works much better than Zantac. Both were on my approved list.

  • Zantac is an excellent nocturnal drug, so I find I have best results if I take my 150 tablet an hour before bed with some milk. Then sleep with your pillows slightly elevated to help keep the acid down.

  • If your getting up to throw up I'd think your heartburn is bad enough to need a prescription. But that's just me I guess. I take tums 1000
  • No suggestions as I feel like I've tried it all and nothing works, but want you to know you aren't the only one.  My heartburn and acid reflux has been terrible as well.  I had no idea that I'd be throwing up from it - I was prepared for morning sickness, but not this!  I haven't been able to lay down fully since I don't know when and it's still awful.  My only relief is knowing that it's temporary.  Hugs!

  • I'd try some of the stuff PP has mentioned first, but if it's bad enough that you are throwing up every night, I'd definitely be more open to taking a prescription...seems the lesser of two evils in this scenario.
  • I've dealt with acid reflux issues for a long time, so I know how painful and frustrating it can be. I was taking just tums up until last week, when I broke down and started taking Zantac which was suggested by my OB.

Are you drinking milk or having a lot of dairy? Its a common misconception that it will help, but milk/dairy has a lot of lactic acid which will contribute to the acid reflux, especially if you have it before bed and then try to lay down.

    Good luck!

After 3 failed Clomid+TI cycles, DD was conceived with IUI#1

    TTC #2

    Clomid 50 mg + IUI#1  = BFP, m/c and D&C at 7w1d

    Clomid 50mg + IUI#2 = BFN

    Clomid 100mg + IUI#3 = BFN

    Lupron + Follistim + IVF#1 = 11ER, 10M, 10F, ET of 1 expanded BBA 5-day blast, 2 Frosties. BFP! Beta 10/13 = 264! Beta 10/15 = 702! EDD 6/21/14

  • I use a prescription and it worked for a while but at 31 weeks reflux came back and I can't tame it. I also have to sleep on my left side so elevating isn't really an option. I hope you find a remedy that works!! Not to much longer to go!!

  • Traditional medicinals brand Throat Coat tea is a life saver! I also take mylanta right before I go to bed and I sleep propped up on pillows.

  • I'm so sorry you're suffering but so happy to know I'm not alone. It's been brutal for me, too. I'm on the same regime as you: two Zantac Max a day. I also take Tums Smoothies when needed. I tried Pepcid but Zantac has worked best for me. Like PPs, I try to sleep a bit propped up which helps with the urge to vomit the hot lava that tries to escape my body at night. Good luck and hang in there. It's amazing how it just magically goes away after birth. Oh, and take the heartburn = baby with lots of hair tales with a grain of salt. I had it bad with my first baby but he was bald until his 1st birthday!

  • Thanks for all of the ideas...I have tried the apple cider vinegar and not only is it the most disgusting thing I have ever had, it didn't work. I really am trying to avoid the prescription if at all possible, even with puking. Which believe me does suck but just really wanting to try to stay natural if at all possible. I sleep elevated too and I am really cutting back on my diet to make sure that I am getting lots of protein versus carbs which is supposed to help. Hopefully it helps and hopefully my little man comes out with lots of beautiful hair, I did so we will see in 8 weeks!
  • Medication was invented for a reason, I have heartburn, natural things didn't help, I use medication and now I feel great! These are approved pregnancy medications that doctors say are ok, I see nothing wrong with getting a little relief.
  • I have had this same issue but my dr won't prescribe anything, no clue why, she keeps telling me to try over the counter. So  I take the strongest prilosec I can and pray that it works. I tried tums, zantac, drinking milk, adding dairy and cutting out certain foods that triggered it but even water gives me acid reflux!! It's horrible. I feel your pain.

Stop torturing yourself. Have them call in some Protonix. It doesn't cross the placenta and will fix you 100%. No need to suffer!

Edit to add: I understand wanting to go all-natural but there are severe consequences to ignoring acid reflux, even only while pregnant. You can quickly develop Barrett's Esophagus syndrome, which is basically pre-cancer from not treating the acid, which leads to corrosion. I feel there is a time to be natural and a time to take advantage of modern medicine.
