First Beach Trip - Need Advice

Well, that is kind of untrue - I took DS last year when he was 5 months old and it was the WORST experience ever, but for many, many reasons.

So, DH and I booked a 3 night 4 day stay for just the 3 of us at the beach in May. He will be 16 months old. What is a must take and what is a don't need? We are staying at a Hilton on the beach with a pool, so I have the basic pool items listed, but I feel so under-prepared (based off my list of things I need to take). We will take our own PNP (I am a germ-a-phobe when it comes to him) but really that is all I have so far. What am I missing, or do I just have a severe case of mommy brain to think my 16 month old isn't high-maintenance??

What are your must have for traveling with a young toddler?

TIA!

Re: First Beach Trip - Need Advice

  • A stroller with a good sunshade. Sun hat, sunscreen, sand toys & beach ball (we got ours from the Dollar Tree before our trip). I also put together a kit with meds for the family and things like band aids and Pedia Lite...again a lot of Dollar Tree stuff....they sell little containers of pedia lite. Books and small toys for indoors. Things like animal crackers or teddy Graham's for your bag. Avoid anything that will melt.

  • Baby Powder!!!

DS was covered in sand as we were leaving the beach.  We sprinkled him with baby powder and were able to brush the sand off of him.

  • We took DS1 to the beach at 17 months old. We took the usual things like clothes, swimsuits, swim diapers and regular diapers/wipes, sippy cups, snack cups (like the ones with the lids where they can't spill everything), LOTS of sunscreen, a PNP and his blanket and sound machine. We took a few toys with us as well, things that didn't take up too much room but he would still enjoy. Honestly we have never brought a stroller to the beach, and never felt like we needed one either. We had to bring baby gates b/c we were staying in a house and not a condo/hotel room and it had two flights of stairs (3 floors). We also had this half-tent thing for the beach....that way there was a good bit of shade if he needed it. Also, do you have puddle-jumpers for your LO? That was a must-have for getting in the water or being near the water. I also second a PP with water shoes. DS really didn't like the feel of sand for a while, and some of the sand was really hot on his bare feet too, so those shoes helped a ton.

  • I would add in Benadryl to your med kit, just in case! Also call your ped office to find out the correct dosage in case you have to give it to your LO in an emergency. You definitely don't want to have to make a call to find out how much to give if you suspect an allergic reaction to anything. Just a thought! I did the same thing with DD before I took her at 8 months. I would also recommend a stroller fan if the weather is going to be really hot and if you're planning on being out for a while (it also worked great for DD even just sitting in her little beach chair when we were outside on the beach). We took our PNP as well and that worked perfectly for us. We held off on packing a lot of food or snacks and just went shopping when we got there only for what we would need for the week. I see you're only staying a few days, so packing your food might be a better option. I just made our luggage lighter by just shopping at the beach. I second purchasing beach items at the dollar tree. We did that too, and gave them to a family we saw coming in that had kids so they could use them. Plus for us so we didn't have to take them back home!  Have a great time!
