For LOs on reflux medication

For those of you whose little ones have been on reflux medication, are they still on it? And if not, how did you decide to take them off it?
My little girl has been on reflux meds since birth, but I'm not sure she has reflux still. We cut one of the drugs out and now she's just on Prilosec but didn't know what the signs were to look for for being ready to be off it. We could gradually wean her off. We'll talk to her pediatrician on Friday during her 7 month check up about it, but interested on what other experiences have been. She's followed by so many specialists that her pediatrician doesn't make all the drug decisions so just wanted to get an idea of when babies usually go off it.

Re: For LOs on reflux medication

  • Lo is still on reflux med, she takes prilosec also.  We skipped a day to see how she would do, and she wasn't happy and had lots of curdled spit up, so we put her back on it.  We plan on trying again in a few months.

  • Mine us still on reflux medicine too. On days he doesn't get it, I can tell he is still having the reflux. I was hoping at 6 months it would stop, but it is still there and he is uncomfortable.

It might be best to slowly cut the doses rather than go cold turkey. An immediate drop in meds can cause an "acid rebound"or overproduction of stomach acid which can be painful or even harmful to the esophagus.
We will have to try that next then, thanks!  Good thinking!

  • Thanks ladies. She's definitely sitting up a lot more but can't stay unsupported for more than 5 mins or so. So maybe i'll talk to her pediatrician about slowly reducing the dose.
  • Mine is no longer on meds. He took Zantac and Prevacid until about two months ago. He got a nasty stomach virus and was throwing up for over a week. We stopped giving him his mess because we noticed it upset his stomach. We have yet to put him back on them. My doctor advised that we should ease him off the medicine. Like skip a dose a day for a few days and the. Maybe give the meds to him every other day for a few days. Just in case.

  • We are still on Zantac 3 times a day. It's part of our routine so have not thought much. Our next check up is at nine months so guess I'll ask then.

E was on Zantac twice a day.  He was prescribed it around 2 months at around the highest dose so the Dr. didn't increase it at his four month appointment because he was still doing fine.  By 6 months the doctor said for his weight he should be taking twice the amount.

Around that time I also had a feeling he just didn't need it anymore (could sit up unassisted for long periods, wasn't spitting up as much) so she said it was okay to stop the night dose and after a week or so stop the morning dose.  She also said sometimes it could take up to 5 days to see the effects of not being on it anymore.

So I took him off the night dose for a couple weeks and then the morning and it was fine.
